Dear pupils, every plant has roots that help it absorb water and minerals from the soil. Roots also help to anchor the plant firmly in the ground. In plants, we observe two main types of root systems. Let's learn what they are!

Why Study Plant Roots?

Knowing how to classify plants based on their roots helps us understand how plants survive in different environments, and which crops are best for our Ghanaian soils.

Tap Root System

Plants like mango, carrot, and neem have a primary thick root that grows deep into the soil. This is called a tap root. Other small roots branch off from this main root. Tap roots help plants reach deep water sources.

Fibrous Root System

Grasses, maize, and rice have roots that spread out in many directions without a main thick root. This is called a fibrous root system. Fibrous roots help prevent soil erosion and are great for Ghana’s farmlands.
