Mexican American War: The Mexican American war was a conflict between the United States and Mexico as a result of U.S. desires of expansion. President Polk pushed for this war because he wanted to bring many Southwestern States that were within the mexican border into the union. American troops won battles, signed treaties and payed millions for states including present day California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming.
Gold Rush: The Gold Rush of 1848 was an important mark of U.S. economic success as a result of the new territories. The discovery of gold particles at John Sutter's sawmill in the Sacramento Valley resulted in people from all over the country traveling to San Francisco to mine gold. This led to an increase in the Californian population and increased immigration to California in order to pan gold. This revolutionized California's economy causing it to be able to finance development, expand their market, and become a metropolis like city.
