Are we still doing the 6 minute thesis? I thought CRW was taking this back. Hard to evaluate because content is unfamiliar.

To improve students' speaking, we need to spend some time on intonation, sentence stress, thought groups and past tense endings before they are assessed on speaking. Delay assessment until this is covered well.

Have students identify difficult words and practice pronunciation of those before presentation. Similarly, practice incorporating vocabulary (preferably AWL) into speaking since they are evaluated on this.

ALS should not be doing the 6-minute thesis. It does not fit because we really cannot comment on the content.

Ahhhh.... the speaking journals. Axe(!) I have been saying for a long time now that this is an inauthentic exercise. Marking this twice is a waste of time because there is not enough of a lasting effect. ***I would have students come in one at a time and have them speak only to me on the topic (and then I could further question them and might even work on grammar and pronun at the same time).***

Practice incorporating vocabulary into speaking (not the sentence patterns as they stand as these often get ditched due to lack of time). We evaluate them on this but do little practice for it.

If speaking journals are to continue, I don't necessarily think the 6-min thesis (or more likely 3 min) is a bad source for the SJ since they should be very familiar with it. I think students should be made aware that we will not be commenting on the content (CRWs job) but rather we will focus on fluency, vocab, grammar, pronun., and so on.
