First, we are met with an anecdote about a superintendent's confidence waning after experiencing adversity in their position and pointing out the realization that the "leadership skills required [during hard times] are not the same ones needed when things [are] going well" (Patterson, 2001). Then, Patterson describes the meaning of resilience and encourages the reader to keep it in mind as a long term construct as you read over the five leadership strengths.
The first strength is to stay upbeat despite any negatives. The second strength requires the leader to not lose focus on what they care about. Next, the leader is urged to remain flexible in how they meet their goals. Then, a resilient leader is one that is proactive at all times. And finally, the leader is urged to conserve said resilience during the harder times to avoid being drained.
The author reminds us that there is no "magic checklist" (Patterson, 2001) for being a strong, resilient leader, but that we can do two major things to steer us in that direction: change our mindsets to realize it's more about how we think about what we're doing than it is about the moves we make, and to do "whatever it takes to move ahead in the face of adversity."
