Current treatment with preterm labor is steroid injections to promote the maturity of lungs. A therapy that improves lung and brain health would immensely benefit preterm babies with this chronic lung disease (Hastings, (2022)).  Ottawa Hospital is investigating the use of MSC (mesenchymal stromal cells)-derived extracellular vesicles in use with preterm newborns in brain and lung development. If this helps improve the outcome of even a single newborn it is worth the research. The current treatment once a women undergoes preterm labor is to provide steroid injections. However, that is on a time constriction on rather or not it will have enough time to cause a change in outcome of lung development. Once born a preterm newborn that undergoes desaturation is placed on supplemental oxygen. The oxygen used to treat premature babies can end up injuring their lungs, leading to BPD. Meanwhile, a lack of oxygen getting to the brain can result in developmental issues (Hastings, (2022)). Even in current treatment we have a variable of risks.
