Seeing a picture or diagram helps me to understand content, especially abstract concepts. Especially when it comes to science, I have found that diagrams and pictures significantly enhance my learning. Over the summer, I took General Physical Science. There were points in that class where what I was reading in the chapters was going over my head and I really struggled to grasp the concept. Luckily, the textbook had some amazing diagrams and illustrations to supplement the text. I work with students who struggle to understand concepts in the classroom and my job is to reinforce the instruction of the general education teacher and help the students who need extra attention. I have seen art serve a tremendous purpose in the classroom as a tool for these students. Particularly in math, art plays a vital role in understanding concepts. The younger students use drawings to grasp basic principles of addition and subtraction. Many of the students draw pictures to represent the problem, and they are able to either add or cross out drawings to help them reach the correct answer. The ability to visualize what the words on the paper are saying makes a world of difference to the students and helps them fully grasp the concepts so they are able to move on to more complex math as they get older.
