1. Identify Learning Outcomes

Begin by reviewing the learning outcomes from the specification. These describe what students should be able to do with the target language by the end of the course. For example, students might need to be able to talk about hobbies, order food, or ask for directions.

2. Select a Real-world Context

Think of real-world situations where students might use the language. Examples could include ordering at a restaurant, planning a holiday, or buying a train ticket.

3. Design the Task

Create a task that is directly linked to the chosen learning outcome and real-world situation. The task should require students to use the language in a meaningful way.

Include all five skills, listening, reading, spoken production, spoken interaction and writing to practice multiple skills.

4. Provide Clear Instructions

Write out the task instructions in simple, clear target language. Make sure students understand what they are expected to do.

5. Create or Gather Supporting Materials

Prepare any materials that will support the task. These could include role cards, maps, menus, brochures, or other audio-visual and digital aids that give context and make the task more authentic.

Assign Roles

If the task involves pairs or groups, assign roles that mirror real-world interactions. For example, one student could play the role of a customer, and the other could be a waiter.

7. Encourage Collaboration

Make the task collaborative, encouraging students to work together and negotiate meaning as they use the language. For example, they might have to plan a trip together, which requires them to ask and answer questions, make suggestions, and agree on details.

8. Provide Opportunities for Reflection

After the task is complete, allow students to reflect on their performance. You could ask questions like: “What words did you find useful?” or “Was there anything you didn’t understand?” This helps students think about their progress and areas to improve.

9. Assess and Give Feedback

As students work through the task, observe their use of language and take notes on how well they are achieving the learning outcomes.

After the task, provide feedback on their strengths and areas for improvement. This feedback should be constructive and linked to the learning outcomes, helping them develop their skills.

10. Access and Challenge

Modify the task based on the language levels of your students. If some students need extra support, provide extra support and scaffolding, for example extra vocabulary lists. For more advanced students, add complexity by asking them to use more detailed language.
