Theory of Mind, or Emotional Reciprocity, is defined as the ability to recognize and interpret the thoughts, feelings, perspectives, and intentions of others to be able to predict their behavior, or the ability to understand emotions through descriptions of body language and facial expressions. Ways that this can impact literacy in our learners with ASD:

Difficulty understanding the perspectives and emotional states of the characters

Difficulty predicting or making inferences about the future actions of characters

Difficulty understanding the emotional states of characters based on the descriptions of their body language and facial expressions in the text

When a student with ASD struggles with the above skills, it can cause difficulty with understanding character development (as it relates to the plot or moves the plot along), difficulty with being able to relate to the text (which can cause frustration or a lack of interest in the story), or difficulty with the ability to determine the theme (or "moral") of the story.

Literal (vs. Abstract Thinking is defined as the ability to focus only on factual information, such as events and actual objects or people in the text, and the inability to focus on other concepts and generalizations, often confused by a lack of understanding of idioms, irony, figures of speech, innuendo, and sarcasm. Ways that this can impact literacy in our learners with ASD:

Difficulty understanding figurative language (e.g., metaphors, hyperbole, etc.) or the use of idioms, irony, innuendo, and sarcasm

Difficulty ignoring irrelevant factual information in text, and missing context cues and other information that enhances the comprehension of the text

Applying only one meaning to a word and failing to be able to use context cues to recognize a different meaning

When a student with ASD struggles with the above skills, it can cause difficulty in determining the theme (or "moral") of a text, difficulty with determining the central idea, and difficulty understanding what the text is talking about. As poetry typically uses a lot of figurative language, poems are often difficult for students with ASD to understand and decipher.

Comprehension is a complex process that has multiple layers of depth into understanding a text, story, or passage. It is the entire purpose of reading and without understanding the text being read, an individual cannot do anything with that text, such as summarize, identify the central idea or supporting details, identify the theme, determine the author's purpose for writing the material, and so much more. When kids struggle to comprehend what they are reading, they are likely to struggle in all academic areas.

Fluency is one of the critical building blocks of reading because fluency is directly related to comprehension. Dr. S. Jay Samuels came up with a theory called the automaticity theory. According to this theory, people have a limited amount of mental energy. A reader who must focus their attention on decoding words may not have enough mental energy left over to think about the meaning of the text. On the other hand, a fluent reader who can automatically decode the words can instead give full attention to comprehending the text. In order to become proficient readers, students need to develop automaticity with text so they can pay attention to the meaning.

It is a digital phonics program that can be used independently or can be used as a teaching tool for teachers, tutors, and homeschoolers. It covers multiple levels of phonics from beginning CVC words to multi-syllabic words. It is advertised as appropriate for all ages of various reading abilities.

This can be a useful application for students with ASD, as it is a fairly simple and plain layout. It highlights each sound/word part/word as you hover over it, which brings attention to the important part, but does not have a busy background or graphics, which can often be a distraction for students with ASD.

It is very fun and engaging, and a "lesson" could be as short or as long as they stay attentive to it.

It is a vocabulary word game that includes a synonym activity with over 7,000 questions, an antonym activity with 1,000 questions, and 600 meaning-from-context questions.

This can be a useful application for students with ASD, as it is a very engaging and fun game. As multi-meaning words, homographs, and homophones can often be very confusing to students with ASD, learning synonyms and antonyms can help these learners better understand words and how they work.

This web-based program has vocabulary practice for all academic areas. It starts with a short (typically 3-5 mins) video about the topic or words that it focuses on, and then can be expanded on from there. Teachers can assign the Vocab Game (where students practice using the words), a Read and Respond to help them build their reading and comprehension skills, and a 10-question quiz that relates to the lesson.

This can be a useful program for students with ASD, as it is extremely engaging and covers all academic areas. Science, Social Studies, and sometimes even Math do not have to same time and rigor to spend on vocabulary that they should, especially since it is so crucial to comprehending the content they are learning. Flocabulary is a fun way for kids to practice these vocabulary words in context and build up those reading, listening, and attention skills. Plus, it also incorporates music, which can be a motivator for many students with ASD.

Digital Frayer Model

Digital frayer models are a great tool for teaching vocabulary. They are an old, evidence-based practice that has been modernized (from being a paper graphic organizer to a digital one). Frayer models differ from standard graphic organizers for vocabulary as they incorporate not only the definition, by using it in a sentence, finding synonyms and antonyms, and providing a picture that shows the word "in action."

This digital graphic organizer can be a useful tool for students with ASD for many reasons. As it is digital, this means that a student with ASD can still fill it out without having to physically write, which means they are more likely to be able to keep up with (or exceed) their peers and not get frustrated by having to write. Although some individuals with ASD excel at drawing, many others struggle with it. Since it is digital, this allows the learner to find real-life pictures related to the word they are learning about. This helps them make a connection to the word, and they are more likely to remember it.

This online program allows you to take a text and have it simplified to the level that works best for your student(s). This allows for all students to have access to the text or passage you are working from, but in a format and level that they can follow along with it independently.

This can be a useful tool for students with ASD to help them comprehend a text more efficiently. Rewordify will often take out "extra" words that are not really necessary for comprehension of the material, which helps students with ASD be able to better understand the text. With less words to potentially focus on and confuse them, it should help them better comprehend the material.

This online program/application provides and one-on-one (AI-powered) tutor. It prompts, corrects, assesses, and encourages the reader to ensure they fully understand the material they are reading. With its advanced speech recognition software, it will automatically select the right reading material for each student to minimize their reading struggles and maximize improvement.

This can be a useful tool for students with ASD to help improve their comprehension (though it can also be used for fluency and vocabulary). Since it adapts to each reader, it help lessens the frustration of reading - by breaking down vocabulary and checking for understand, it helps the reader learn how to better understand what they are reading, which is one of the biggest issues students with ASD face, especially for narrative text.

It has hundreds of passages ranging from 150L-1100L on the Lexile Measuring Scale. It tracks your child's progress and is self-paced and independent, so it can be used for both individuals or entire classrooms.

This can be a useful program for students with ASD to help build fluency skills.
