Understanding Scoliosis

Before establishing his Atlanta-based practice, Rick Kuhlman secured his doctor of chiropractic from Life University. As a chiropractor, Rick Kuhlman delivers care to patients with spinal conditions such as scoliosis.

In patients with scoliosis, the spine takes an abnormal shape by curving to the side and rotating. For the vast majority of people with the condition, spinal curvature is not severe enough to require treatment.

However, in about 10 percent of scoliosis patients, spinal curvature progresses to the extent that it can cause problems such as walking and balance difficulties, pain, and even heart issues. Treatment for scoliosis varies by the severity of the condition. Some patients may wear a back brace to stop spinal curvature from progressing, while others may undergo surgery to correct abnormality.

In addition, a number of studies suggest that chiropractic rehabilitation programs offer sustained benefits to people with scoliosis. For instance, a paper published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine examines nearly 30 scoliosis patients who reported reduced pain and disability following chiropractic treatment. The subjects reported results lasting for two years after the treatment had concluded.

How Chiropractors Treat Sciatica

For more than two decades, Rick Kuhlman, DC, has been providing high-quality chiropractic care at The Chiropractic Center, LLC, a Georgia-based facility consisting of five clinics. A reputable chiropractor, Dr. Rick Kuhlman has presented at such institutions as Logan University and Emory University and treats a range of conditions, including sciatica.

A painful condition, sciatica is caused by a narrow spinal canal, strain on the spine, or compression of the sciatic nerve. Once the condition has been properly diagnosed, a chiropractor sets about treating it, often with ice/cold therapy. This type of therapy controls the pain caused by sciatica and reduces inflammation around the compressed nerve.

Chiropractors may also use an ultrasound or a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit to treat the condition. Ultrasounds deliver a gentle heat to deep tissue through the use of sound waves. This often reduces the chance of muscle spasms and cramping and may help with stiffness and pain. A TENS unit may also be used to stimulate the muscles and reduce spasms by delivering electrical current to the affected area.

Finally, chiropractors most commonly use spinal manipulation to treat sciatica. These adjustments free spinal movement and put misaligned vertebrae back into their proper position. As a result, the nerves along the spine are no longer irritated or compressed by misaligned vertebrae and nearly every symptom related to sciatica is relieved.
