Why Study Humanities?

But why should students study the humanities at all? First, students want to study meaningful issues, issues that stress connections, issues that adults and teachers frequently ignore: What are the roots of prejudice? How much should we be guided by reason and how much by emotion? How can we deal with problems of scarcity? How can we create community? How can we be certain about anything? Experience with high school students in Humanitas classes has taught us that in the hands of flexible and sensitive teachers, such humanities questions will keep students hooked from bell to bell.

Second, Humanitas and the other CHART programs teach kids from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds, who, like all adolescents, would rather be interested in school than bored. In classroom after classroom, students we found hard to interest through traditional approaches in the five core subjects called for in the New American Schools—English, history, geography, math, and science1 —will read and engage in heated discussion on humanities questions.

By focusing on important issues, the questions raised in humanities classes promote active listening and critical thinking, and they help students begin making connections among the five core subjects. For example, the question, “Do we have free will, or are we simply programmed by symbols?” will quickly bring a classroom to questions of language and logic. With a simple introduction to symbol theory, students begin to understand the power of words in shaping behavior. They develop a habit of thinking about words, examining metaphors, and asking, “What does this mean?”

By applying this critical approach to history, students learn to analyze propaganda and political speeches. By comparing carefully reasoned historical arguments with the close logic of the scientific method, students see that the language of science is only one way of describing the world.

Finally, the study of humanities is important because human beings have to make decisions based on values. Even if the day arrives when every objective fact about the physical and biological universe is known, we will still face questions of equity, the good life, and community—humanities questions. Students know this deep down, so when given the opportunity to study the sciences as part of a humanities curriculum, they see more meaningful connections and experience more success than they do in specialized classes. For this reason, a number of Humanitas schools include biology, physical science, geography, and even chemistry as part of their humanities programs.2

This course provides for the study of content drawn from history, philosophy, literature, languages and the arts. Subject areas may include linguistics, archeology, jurisprudence, the history and philosophy of science, ethics, and other aspects of the social sciences which relate to understanding life and the world.

The humanities can be described as the study how people process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world.

In my definition, the humanities not only include literature of both ancient and modern languages, the performing arts, philosophy, comparative religion, and cultural studies, but also history, anthropology, and linguistics, although the latter three are often on the border between humanities and the social sciences.

Humanities:
1) In your own words, what does it mean to be human?
- to be at the center of our own universe, to experience life in all its colors and all its potential. To have and create thoughts and opinions. To love and have compassion for things or other people.
2) What are ideas, and why are they important?
- Ideas are thoughts, plans, or opinions that are made by humans. They are important because without ideas, progress isn't made, change doesn't happen, much of human development stops.
3) What happens when ideas clash?
- When ideas clash, thoughts are made, and plans are drawn to make change, and make progress, the human body develops with every thought or idea, as well as the world around us.
4) Why do some ideas take hold, spread, and last?
- Some ideas take hold, spread, and last because they are ideas that could truly make a different in the lives of them and those around them, as well as the environment.
5) How might the environment affect the way we think and act?
- The weather or climate could easily change the way a person thinks or acts. For example; rainy weather could cause sadness, fog could cause confusion, and warm sunny weather could cause happiness.
6) What is power, how do people use it, and why is it important?
- Power is the capacity to cause change, produce effects on others or potentially influence others. Power is the function of a relationship because it belongs not only to the leader, but also to the followers and the situation.
7) What is our responsibility as human beings in the world?
- To keep the world clean, be humane to others, take care of the environment, protect the world around us, and accept responsibility.
8) What is race, and why does it matter?
- Race is the ethnicity of people around the world. Where they originate from, their culture, their beliefs, their religion, etc. It helps us understand the ways of different cultures.
9) What does it mean to be American, and how has race affected American Identity?
- To be American means to be born in the United States. Race has affected American Identity because most people born in the US are Caucasian.
10) How does identity effect how we interact with other humans?
- Identity effects how we interact with other humans by showing how much we have in common with another person.

List your top 5 current event topics, from top to bottom, that you would like to discuss in Humanities class this year, and why?
1) Covid 19
2) BLM
3) Border control
4) Starving people around the world
5) decreased cancer

List your top 5 ancient civilizations, from top to bottom, that you would like to investigate and analyze.
1) The Persian Civilization
2) The Maya Civilization
3) The Ancient Egyptian Civilization
4)The Chinese Civilization.
5)The Indus Valley Civilization.

List 1 Project Based Learning Idea
1) Slides over anything that involves the human body, the way it thinks, the brain, the way it feels emotions, or the way development of people over time.

Investigate a quote that calls to your attention over what it means to be human. Any living mammal is capable of feeling emotions like fear, anger, and sadness, but not all are capable of love. I think that is what makes humans so unique. Humans have the ability to love with their mind, and love with their heart, so not only are we feeling it in just one organ, but we feel it on another area of our body. We are able to comprehend, and come up with thoughts, ideas, and opinions about how we feel, or what we want.
