There are different types of parenting styles:
-Authoritative parenting style, which is a combination of unconditional regard, acceptance of childs' behaviour with in certain limits, with relatively firm control.
-Authoritarian parenting style, which involves the parent using strict rules and regulations, parent believing they are always right, having domination control over child.
-permissive parenting style, in which parents show warmth and allow the child to shape their own behaviours, having little control over child.
-global self esteem: described as the individuals positive and negative attitude towards themselves in total.
-specific self esteem: indicates how a person feels about their ability in particular domains such as sports etc.

In this research we are focusing on global self esteem, how the child feels about themselves and their confidence levels about themselves. At a young age it is important for parents to act and behave appropriately towards their children as it could affect their growth and development later on.

Aim: The purpose of this research is to help clarify how different parenting styles may be contributing to self-esteem levels in children.
Prodecure:
- children who were taking part in the study were 84 children (52 female, 31 male) aged 11-12 years of age, they were tested during school time.
- The participants where asked to complete questionnaires which took roughly around 25 minutes to complete.

The first questionnaire was Harters, self- perception profile for children (SPPC) which measured specific self-esteem domains and global self-steem.

the second questionnaire was Child Report of Parental Behaviour Inventory which allowed the child to evaluate their parents parenting syle.

the third questionnaire was the ANOVA and ANCOVA which was used to assess the influence of parenting styles on global and specific domains of self-esteem.

Results:
The parenting style of authoritarian, authoritative and permissive were used to categorise parental behaviours. The results indicate that for white middle class children, authoritative parenting style would positively influence self- esteem as a whole. Children whose parents had an authoritative parenting style had significantly higher global self- esteem than children whose parents were classified as having authoritarian parenting styles.
Wolff,J.(2000) self esteem: the influence of parenting styles. retrieved 23/4/18, from http://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1535/

generalisation

Th results shown indicate that children and adolescents who have parents with permissive and/or authoritative parenting styles would have children and adolescents with positive self esteem. however children and adolescents who have parents with authoritarian parenting style would have negative or lower global self esteem. The hypothesis was partly supported as not only do parents with authoritative parenting styles have children with positive self esteem but also parents with permissive parenting style. The research should be done in more countries and places so it gives us more of a generalisation rather than one specific society or country.

Research findings can imply that different parenting styles have major influence on children and adolescents self esteem level. If you were a controlling and ignorant parent who felt that whatever you say and do is right (authoritarian parenting style) your child would most likely have a lower global self -esteem. If you were a calm and accepting parent who would lets their child decide for themselves and only get involved when needed (permissive and authoritative parenting style) your child would have higher self-esteem levels. This information is relevant to society as the way you raise your child has a major influence on their self-esteem and in the long run their future.

It was hypothesised that parents with authoritative parenting styles would have children with higher self- esteem levels compared to authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. Source 2 best supported the hypothesis as the results had indicated that authoritative parenting style is the parenting style which had more of a positive influence on children and adolescents. Source 1 had also stated that authoritative parenting style has a positive effect on children and adolescents however parents who have a permissive parenting style also had positive influence on children and adolescents equal to authoritative parenting style.
Both sources had limitations however no bias was shown in either one.
source 1-
- the researchers mainly focused on adolescents from the urban society of India which made things biased as they only focused on one society, rather than both urban and rural.
- since this research was done in India, it is hard to generalise it for all parents and children, if the same research is done in another country it would give more of an accurate result.
source 2-
- The research was conducted on children who were from, white middle- class, European families, which could chance and effect results as its only focusing on middle- class European families and not higher class or lower class families, making it hard to generalise for all families.

the conclusion that can be drawn could some what be generalised to the population as a whole, as yes, there are different parenting styles, however the three major ones are permissive, authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles, which are used to fit majority of the population. from the results, it is shown that permissive and authoritative parenting styles have a positive influence on self esteem of children and adolescents. while children whose parents have a authoritarian parenting styles would most likely have children and adolescents with low self-esteem.
more research would need to be conducted for a better understanding on this topic
