Listening to Rammstein

02/11/2016
I spent an hour listening and translating the lyrics of three Rammstein songs: "Du hast", "Ich will" and "Sonne". I learned new vocabulary (eure Energie, der Tod, fühlen, zum allen Tagen), and also I heard/saw words that I understood: "Hier kommt die Sonne", sehen, versehen, hören... I also saw the grammatical difference between interrogative and affirmative sentences very clearly in "Ich Will".
What I enjoyed the most is the word play in "Du hast", because habe and hasse sounds so similar, when the singer completes the sentence "Du hast mich gefragt" progressively, he says "Du hast mich", which doesn't make sense unless it is "Du hasst mich".

I listened to the songs in Spotify and I looked the lyrics in Google Music. To translate I used Google translator.

Common phrases in Duolingo

30/10/2016
I spent 45 minutes learning common phrases in the webpage Duolingo, like "wie geht's?", "bis bald", "bis später", "bis morgen", "es tut mir leid", "Entschuldigung", "in ordnung", "genau". What I like the most about duolingo is the ability to practice my speech skills, because I definitely think I need a lot of practice in that field. I chose to study the common phrases because I think they crucial in order to be able to maintain a small conversation in German.

9/11/2016
I watched the film "Goodbye Lenin!" in German. First, I tried to watch it with German subtitles. However, I found it too difficult for me, as I barely could understand anything, so I had to switch to English subtitles.
I found the film quite nice and funny, I learned something about German society, and it also helped me a bit to pick some pronunciation.
It was also very rewarding whenever I understood words and small phrases. Moreover, I was able to distinguish the use of some pronouns (ein vs einen, for example).

Conversation with fellow German student

19/11/12
I had a conversation in German with a friend who is also taking a German module, however, she has a B1 level. We decided to go to Bar One and chat for about half an hour in German to practice.
I thought I wouldn't be able to defend myself however I found that I knew how to say many things (who I am, what I study, like to do, talk about my family...) albeit my friend corrected me quite often in my speech, which was good because it allowed me to learn new things.
I could also understand a lot of what she said, because she spoke quite slow. Whenever I didn't understand something, she taught me new vocabulary.
I think this was quite a positive experience because I learnt new things and had a fun time, and more importantly, I gained a lot of confidence in my speaking and listening skills.

15/11/12
During my German lab class, they recommended me to have a look at girls4teaching YouTube channel, specially their playlist "German lessons with Eva, Unit 1". I chose the videos on colours and seasons, months and days of the weeks as they were fairly straightforward and important topics to know which we haven't seen yet in class.
The video on colours (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q65ku-Ms9Do&index=6&list=PLjy3gRorgRnPu2_IyAbyua7B-u12ijou3) was useful particularly because was interactive and allowed me to practice my pronunciation. I also learnt who Franz Marc was!
The video on seasons, months and days of the weeks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4GvYa-3BmY&index=9&list=PLjy3gRorgRnPu2_IyAbyua7B-u12ijou3) was not as interactive however it was still good because I could hear the different words as many times as I wanted and repeat them until I was comfortable with my pronunciation.

21/10/2016
I watched the following video about the alphabet and phonetics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpBPaDI5IgI) because after the lab class on the alphabet I felt that I didn't know it well enough. I enjoyed the video because it is quite slow and gives you reference words in English which use the sounds, as well as German words in which those same sounds are also used.
However, I think that in the future I will have to go back to the video again to review it, as I don't think I have interiorized the phonetics yet.

06/11/2016
This week we learnt when to use the accusative or the dative, however it wasn't crystal clear for me and I felt like I had to do some extra work to really lean how to use those cases.
In order to do so, I completed several exercises in the webpage german.net, under the 'nominative, accusative or dative' tag, which took me a little over 45 minutes to do. I think the exercises were appropriate for my level, as they were not too easy nor too difficult.
This exercises definitely helped me improve my grammar and I would recommend them to my fellow classmates.

However, I wanted to know in more depth how to express directions.
To learn this, I used the following webpage: https://www.rocketlanguages.com/german/learn/directions-in-german/
I found this page quite useful as it has a lot of vocabulary, which you can also listen to in order to learn the proper pronunciation. In addition, it includes vocabulary for different parts of a city, which is very handy from a traveller’s perspectrive.
