One Cause of the Seven Years' War

The Ohio River Valley, also known as the Middle Ground, was a place of great tension in the mid-18th century. Indians from Shawnee, Delaware, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Iroquois tribes lived together in villages along with European traders and an occasional missionary. In 1749, Virginia granted half a million acres to the Ohio Company in the area. Land claim disputes caused the French to bolster their presence in the region by constructing forts. After the French failed to recognize the Ohio Company's land claims, expeditions were lead into the area and the war started.
