The focus of the song shifts with each verse, though the purpose of the whole song remains consistent throughout.
Overwhelmingly, it looks to sardonically address each of the key actors in the war encouraging them to participate with arguments that are blatantly immoral and unreasonable which, in turn, discourage listeners from supporting the war efforts.
The first verse addresses soldiers as "big strong men" who should "put down their books" and pursue a career as a soldier instead of an academic.
The second verse appeals to generals who have a "big chance" to increase their power and status by killing an identified enemy.
The third verse encourages companies to seek profit from the war at the expense of human lives, even if people must "hope and pray" that the weapons they manufacture actually impact the enemy.
The fourth verse persuades parents to send their sons off to the war, even if they'll "come home in a box" - something that is viewed as a source of pride.
The chorus brings all of these together by stating "we're all gonna die" to contend that none of these key actors will benefit from participating in the war.

The structure of the song is quite simple as the chorus does not change throughout the song, while the verses do. this is seen as the typical structure of any song in general, which makes for the lyrics to be understood and interpreted in any way the listener wants to see it as. While it is simple in its structure, the lyrical devices such as use of "Pearly Gates" which indicate some sort of haven.

The song 'I feel like I'm fixing to die' follows the classic verse and chorus that majority of songs follow. The chorus doesn't change throughout the song. The verses are found to all be of similar length.

The verses address different people, the first is seen to address soldiers 'come on all of you, big strong men'
The second verse addresses the generals and the higher ups in the war. 'well, come on general's, lets move fast'
The third addresses business making money and profit on the suffering of others 'come on Wall Street, don't be slow'
The fourth verse addresses the mothers who are sending their children off to the war. 'Come on mothers throughout the land'

The chorus itself, is written in a sarcastic tone, and almost being aggressive towards the thought of death. 'whoopee! we're all gonna die'
whilst also referring to 'the pearly gates' giving it a further religious context.

GAS! Quick, boys!'
These both refer to the age of the boys heading off to the war.
showing that many American soldiers were ripped from their families very young to fight and often didn't return.

McDonald employs dark humour to create a satirical take on the Vietnam War, the ridiculousness of the attitudes to the Vietnam War and the perspectives of all involved, including the solider, the general, the greedy cooperation's and those left at home, waiting for news on the state of their sons.
