When an environment like a forest is destroyed by a fatal cause such as a forest fire, carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) is released from the tree’s trunks and is released back into the atmosphere. When more of these environments are destroyed, heat is trapped within Earth and raises the average temperature to alarming amounts. Equilibrium is broken this way and humans, animals, and plants won’t be able to adjust and may die off. An environment like a grassland can contain carbon by storing them within their roots and into their soil, so when the grassland is destroyed, the soil is stored rather than released and with this the soil is also made more healthy and more important niches such as decomposers can enter the environment. If there are more grasslands in our biosphere, less heat is being bounced around in our environment and will make Earth cooler. The grasslands prevent the 414 parts per million of carbon dioxide from increasing, and can actually help decrease this rate. As these parts increase, so does our average temperature, so the most realistic and achievable goal for the world is to lower this number."
