This book makes a circle, back to the first page (the chapter called "Getting to Know You"). In the end, Mimi says she's a daughter, a friend, a future astronaut, etc. In the beginning, she starts with the question: Who am I? This all connects back to the theme of identity. Throughout the book, we follow her journey of finding who she really is. In the end, she does! Yet, I believe she knew all along. The actual struggle, was for people to actually see her for those characteristics.

This book ended wonderfully. The theme of FCM is identity. Throughout the book, we learn more about Mimi as she learns about herself. She learns about many things, which in turn shapes her.
She suffers a lot throughout the book, which is why i think she had trouble figuring out her identity. Mimi was afraid of what others might think if she was her true self. So she hid, from herself and others. Before, we see she isnt afraid to speak up about her dreams, yet later she is. This shows her fear. I said this book ended wonderfully, and thats because in the end, she learns to be herself for herself and not for others. She claims she is a friend, daughter, aspiring astronaut, and that is enough for her.

The ending of this book was open-ended yet very clear when you think about it. The theme of this book is identity and how others around you can make you different. Not just us get to know Mimi, she gets to know herself, in the start of the book she is wondering who is she and what does she want, at the end she is saying who she is and who she has become
during the book. At the start she was very insecure and scared about how people would treat her but as she grew emotionally and socially people. started to treat her better.

"[ ]" means my thinking

After ";" is the quote from the book.

I got lazy so I didn't write all my annotations because I have like 100 but I hope you enjoy!

Marker: Interesting & space; "The stars and the moon, the sun and all the planets, every cell, every atom, every single snowflake belong in this universe" [This quote is important because it shows Mimi's character growth and a statement that is very inspiring along with true.]

Marker: Interesting; Then Stacey says, "I dreamed I was riding in a car with Victor, and Mother was driving." [This quote shows not only that she has hope that her mother will change, but that the world will too.]

Marker: Interesting; Sharon says. "We flew here." Nobody's saying (but we're all thinking) that now our relatives are rich. [I'm not sure I'm right about this but I think it can connect to our lives, if we are able to fly on a plane we don't really think "Oh, were rich".]

Marker: Interesting & inequality; ...and then she says, "You're right, Mimi. Since when is dancing a crime?" [When I read this I thought: Dancing is not a crime, but back then dancing with a different colored person, it was in some sort a crime.]

Marker: Inequality; No one's helping Victor, who's trying to sit up,... [My thinking: Even though Victor was the one who was innocent and beat up, they still wouldn't help him because of his color.]

Marker: Interesting, Other, & Inequality; Michael from my homeroom asks me, "Wanna dance?" No one ever asked me that before,... [I think that ever since page 284, people started to be nicer to her, Mr. Dell, classmates, teachers, etc... Ever since her action to take workshop.]

Marker: Inequality & Interesting; "Do you honestly think you can change the rules, change the world, by switching classes?" [I could reference from this quote about a group of 4 or 3 black men who entered a white restaurant and just sat there, while people were calling insults and throwing things at them. (True story). If I was in the book and I was there in his office I would say: (Sarcastically): "You have an amazing sense of humor!"]

Marker: Interesting & question; I stop at Victor's table at lunch. He's eating an egg salad sandwich and reading The Autobiography of Malcom X. [I was with my dad when I read this and I asked him who Malcom X was, and it turns out that he was a change maker in racial inequality. Question: Does Victor believe that the world can be changed as well?]

Marker: ALL markers +extra; ...for the eight days the astronauts will be in space. And I draw a solid line for their trip so far. I will draw them all the way home. [I can't help but realize that when she says "home" I think she is referring to the moon.]

Marker: Inequality & Other; how other people get to decide when I'm invisible but I can't make them disappear. [I think this connects to another quote from the book: Maybe I should forget all about what I want, and do what other people want me to do. These quotes show times when she just wants to give up herself and hope.
