We listen to some examples, and learn how to play the 12 bar blues on percussion instruments (xylophones and boomwhackers). Then, students write their own blues lyrics and share them with the class if they wish! Usually, we sing our songs over the instrument accompaniment, but this year we will just read them or record them if the student wishes to do so!

This week, we are focusing on literature (writers, poets, and even directors in film). Students are learning names of Black humans they may never learn otherwise. At the end of the month, we are going to have a socratic seminar on who they believe was , or is, the most influential Black contributor. They will have to use facts to support their claim.
