Introduction

Have you ever heard about Greek and Roman heroes like Hercules? Maybe you have even heard of Odysuss being in the Trojan war, having to fight for ten years and not being able to see his family while in the war? Or Achilles being practically immortal? My name is Alexander Kozlow. I'm in fifth grade, I love baseball, Greek mythology, Roman mythology, and video games. I also like school. My favorite subjects are math, science, and literacy. I like reading, and playing Basketball with my best friend Yorenos. I also like playing tennis and writing. On top of that, I love sports, and games. That is what I like and my identity (who I am).

For my capstone project, I am going to do Greek and Roman Mythology heroes. I am very curious about this topic because one time when I was in a library, I came across this book series called Percy Jackson, so I became interested in the topic and read the full series. After I finished reading the series, I became focused on getting more information and books from Percy Jackson, so I read a related series called “The Heroes Of Olympus” which has a lot of information, and I fell in love with the series. This is how I started being interested in Greek mythology and Roman mythology, and how I got my background information.

My sub-questions are who is Hercules, who is Archillies, who is Odysuss, Who is Percy Jackson, and who is Annabeth Chase. In the sub question: who is Hercules, I will be telling you about who he is, and what he did, for example the twelve labors of Hercules. I will show you who Archillies is, like the famous story of how he is immortal for fighting, but if he gets stabbed in one spot (which I won’t tell you yet) he dies. I will also show you who percy jackson was, like how he completed many quests, and saved the world many times. On top of that, I will show you how Anebeth completed many quests, and saved the world with Percy Jackson. I will show you about Odysseus, or like how he literally had to be separated from his family for ten years. Those are my sub-questions.

Today, Greek and Roman mythology are considered a myth and not a religion. These days, people read about Greek and Roman mythology for fun, and to see what people believed in in ancient Greece, and ancient Rome. Some people also study ancient Greece and Rome to see if it was really all real and all the monsters, and gods were real, but not many people do that. You can also go to museums to view old ancient Greece and Roman artifacts, like swords, shields, armor, and more. That is what most of Roman and Greek mythology are known for today. Also as I go through the rest of my paragraphs and essays, I will go into more depth about what ancient Greece and Rome was like today and back then.

Odysseus, the shrewdest of the Greeks, went to the court disguised as a peddler. When he had spread his wares before the girls, a sudden trumpet blast was sounded. The girls screamed and fled, but Achilles betrayed his gender by seizing a sword and spear from the peddler’s stock.

Angered and stricken by grief, Achilles vowed to kill Hector. Meanwhile, his mother hastened to Olympus to beg a new suit of armor from Hephaestus, god of the forge. Clad in his new armor, Achilles again went into battle. He slew many Trojans, and the rest—except for Hector—fled within their city. Achilles then killed Hector.

Hera, still relentless in her hatred of Hercules, sent a fit of madness upon him during which he killed his wife and children. In horror and remorse at his deed Hercules would have slain himself, but he was told by the oracle at Delphi that he should purge himself by becoming the servant of his cousin Eurystheus, king of Mycenae. Eurystheus, urged on by Hera, devised as a penance the 12 difficult tasks, the “Labors of Hercules.”

Who Was Hercules? In this essay I will be showing you about Hercules's childhood/young adult life, adulthood, the twelve laborers, how he died, and more. Hercules’s father and mother were Zeus (king of the gods), and Alcmene. When Hercules was an infinite, Hera (The queen of the gods) was jealous of Zeus having children with somebody else, so she hated Hercules and sent two serpents to kill Hercules. When the serpents arrived, Hercules strangled them in his cradle. After that, when Hercules was a young adult, he attended camp half-blood, where he trained with a centaur named Chiron. One day, two maidens came to Hercules. They offered different paths depending on what Hercules chose. Arete represented virtue; Kakia was vice. Kakia offered Hercules pleasure and riches if he would follow her. Arete offered him only glory for a lifelong struggle against evil. Hercules chose to be guided by Arete. When Hercules was an adult, Hera, still relentless in her hatred of Hercules, sent a fit of madness upon him during which he killed his wife and children. In horror and remorse at his deed Hercules would have slain himself, but he was told by the oracle at Delphi that he should purge himself by becoming the servant of his cousin Eurystheus, king of Mycenae. Eurystheus, urged on by Hera, devised as a penance the 12 difficult tasks, the “Labors of Hercules.” This meant he would have to go on many hard quests to be forgiven for the death of his Children and wife. Some of the tasks were the Nemean lion. The first labor of Hercules was slaying a terrible monster called the Nemean lion. But, there's a catch. The Nemean lion is no regular lion, it is a giant lion that is almost impossible to kill unless you're a god, or shoot it in the mouth. Hercules then strangled the lion, and or its fur coat for protection. Also, one of the most famous paintings/pictures of Hercules is Hercules with a club, and the Lions fur coat going into battle. After this, Hercules went after the second labor task: slay a Hydra (A Hydra is a monster with nine heads, breaths fire, and if you slay all the heads they regrow into more heads, so Hercules had to get fire and kill it with that because that is the only way to kill/defeat a Hydra.).The next labor was to capture a wild creature called the Ceryneian stag with golden horns, but Hercules captured the creature and brought it to Eurystheus where he finished the third labor. The fourth labor/next labor was to capture another wild animal called the Erymanthian boar. As Hercules trapped the animal, then strangled the animal, and when the boar gave up, Hercules captured the boar, and gave the boar to king Eurystheus, Hercules had finished the first, second, third, and fourt labors, and was ¼ of the way finished/finishing with the twelve labors. The next fifth labors were to slay the fierce Stymphalian birds. Hercules used his club, and beat up the birds until they were dead. A little bit about the Stymphalian birds is that they have sharp beaks, black beady eyes, huge body’s, and eat human flesh. When Hercules finished the fifth labor and was moving on to the next labor, (the sixth labor) where Hercules had to clean the Augean stables, which had not been cleaned for 30 years it also had flesh eating horses which I will go into more depth in the seventh labor.(the seventh labor) he had to capture some flesh-eating wild mares of Diomedes. The wild mares of Diomedes are horses, but don’t get fooled by their cute looks, because if you get too close to them, they will kill you and eat your flesh. For his eight labors, he had to kill king Diomedes, and feed his flesh to the horses. It’s pretty brutal, but sometimes Greek mythology can get very brutal. After that, Hercules was already almost done with most of his labor, and he is so close to earning his freedom back. For the ninth labor, Hercules had to obtain the belt of Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. He defeated the Amazons that guarded queen Hippolyta, killed the queen, and took her belt (if you are wondering what the Amazons are, they are a group of women who believe they are better than men. They are also very fast and strong warriors). For his tenth labor Hercules captured the oxen of the monster Geryon, which dwelt on the fabled island Erytheia. (Geryon is a three bodied monster). For the eleventh labor, Hercules had to steal golden apples, which are located in Mount Othrys, and guarded by the four sister nymphs which were called the Hesperides. The nymph's father was called Atlas. Atlas is one of the titans, and lives on Mount Othrys. Atlas also carries the heavens on his back (the sky) as punishment from Zeus for leading the Titans in their battle with the Olympian Gods for control of the heavens. To obtain these apples, Hercules offered to take the sky for Atlas while he took the apples. For Hercules’s last labor, he had to go down all the way to Hades to capture a three headed hug dog named Cerberus. Hercules captured the beast and then came back to Eurystheus and showed him the beast, but the king was so terrified that he sent Hercules again to Hades to give the beast back. After Hercules finished all the difficult/Impossible labors, Hercules was now free and was now no longer responsible for his wife’s and children's death. Hercules later found a new woman called Deianeira, and they married each other. One day, a centaur called Nessus tried to carry off Hercules’ wife, Deianeira. Hercules shot Nessus with a poisoned arrow, and the dying centaur gave Deianeira some of his blood as a love charm to try to kill Hercules. The problem was that Deianeira loved Nessus, so Deianeira tried to put Nessus' blood in a cloak, and send it to Hercules. When Hercules wore the blood soaked cloak, Hercules immediately felt fire in his veins. Hercules tried to flee to Mount Othrys where he dug himself a grave, and died in it. When Hercules died, his mortal body was consumed, but his soul was brought as a god.In my opinion on the story of Hercules, his life can be very brutal, like for instance Deianeira sending Hercules a blood soaked cloak so he could die. But I think that Hercules is a very interesting hero. Also Hercules was the strongest demigod child of Zeus, so that makes him more special, judging by other great heroes that were a demigod son of Zeus. On top of that, Hercules is one of the most well known heroes, even if you ask an adult if they know Hercules, they will most likely say yes. These are some of my thoughts, and my opinion on the story of Hercules.

In this essay I will be showing you about what is a Greek/Roman hero? A Greek/Roman mythology hero is a demigod that is a father/daughter of an olympian god. The most powerful demigods are normally children of very powerful gods like Hades (god of the underworld/dead), Poseidon (god of the sea), Zeus (god of the sky), Ares (god of war) and other great gods of the most powerful Olympian gods. For example almost everybody knows who Hercules is. Ask an adult, and they will probably say they do know Hercules. That’s because Hercules was a very powerful demigod and he had a ton of powers because his dad was Zeus. If you think that’s all that a demigod does, then you would be wrong. Demigods do very important tasks, like help the gods in battle, become strong, and generally perform special tasks. Demigods also try to live a mortal life by going to school, getting jobs, and other things. But of course it’s not so easy. If demigods get to go to school, they will most likely get kicked out of the school because a monster tries to kill the demigod. But you may question, why don’t mortals see the monsters? It’s because there is a hidden veil called the mist to protect mortals from seeing what the world is really like. A problem with demigods is that sometimes demigods get mad at their parents because demigods rarely get to see their parents. So the result is that some demigods transfer sides and are on the Olympian gods' enemy's side like for example they join the Giants or the Titans side (These horrible creatures are a big threat to the Olympian gods.) These are very big problems because demigods share their parents' powers, so they can use those powers to kill their godly parents in a war. Demigods also tend to have problems with themselves like demigods have either dyslexia, ADHD, being lactose intolerant, and other issues. Not all gods like their nephews, or other family members. For instance, when Hercules was born, Hera (queen of the heavens) hated Hercules and tried to kill him. Demigods also hate gods, like when Hera tried to kill Hercules, Hercules started to hate Hera. The problem is that if a demigod hades a god they can’t attack the god/goddess, but if a goddess/god wants to attack a demigod, they could even go as far as killing them, and sending their soul to the fields of punishment (the fields of punishment is a place were terrible people who died go, and have to suffer for the rest of eternity).	If you are wondering where demigods go to stay safe, they have to go to places like if you are a Greek demigod, then the best option for you living and not being overrun by monsters is a place called camp-halfblood. In this camp, you can complete quests given to you by the camp leader named Chiron. You will also train, and live there with your siblings from your god father or mother. But, if you are Roman, you could go to camp Jupiter, where everything is Roman mythology, and you get to live there. They also serve you a college education inside a base in the camp where you could live a normal life without monsters. Some bad things about living in camp Jupiter is that if you say “I swear on my life” to something, they treat this very seriously, and if you fail, they will kill you.

In this essay, I will be showing you about Achillies’s childhood, parents, life, battles, wife, rival, and death.Achilles had two parents, his mom was Thetis, a Nereid (a sea nymph), and his dad was Peleus, king of Thessaly and a grandson of Zeus, the lord of heavens. When Achillies was born, the fates (creatures who tell the future) had foretold that a war would begin, and Achillies would die in his prime position. Achillies’s parents were scared of this becoming true, so they dipped him in the River Styxs so that weapons could not kill Achillies (the River Styxs is the river that went along the underworld that if you fall into you will become practically immortal but it gives you one weak spot). Even though this made weapons look like toy swords, Achilles’s weak spot was the only part of the body that if he got stabbed, shot, or broke the Achilles heel, he would die.	When the Trojan War started, Achillies’s mother was scared that the fates were right, and Achillies would die by a weapon. So, to try to prevent the fates from becoming valid, Achillies’s parents dressed him as a girl so he wouldn't fight in any wars, or other soldiers from enemy armies would not kill Achillies. Achillies’s mother then hid him with the maidens at the court of the king of Scyros. The trick did not work. Odysseus, the most intelligent of the Greeks went to the court disguised as a peddler. When Odysseus found the right time, Odysseus started a fight. All the maidens screamed, ran, and fled, but Achilles showed his true gender by picking up a sword and a spear from the peddler’s stock, and fought. Soon after this, Achillies was determined to fight in the Trojan war. Achilles soon joined the battle and took over his fathers troops, the Myrmidons. Finally moved by the Greeks, Achilles gave and trusted his best friend to give his armor. When Patroclus led the Myrmidons into battle with Achillies armor, the Trojans saw Achilles armor and thought Patroclus was Achillies, so the Trojans fled. But, a mortal warrior named Hector, and the leader of the Trojans killed Patroclus. Then Hector wore Achillies armor as a prize. Then, the Myrmidons had no choice but to flee.	Furious, Achilles vowed to kill Hector. While this was going on, Achillies’s mother prayed to Olympus to beg a new suit of armor from the god Hephaestus (god of forge and fire). The god Hephaestus had accepted Achilles' request and had a new suit and armor to go into battle. Soon after, Achillies went into battle again. During the battle, Achillies killed many Trojans, which put more fear into the living Trojans. He left Hector for later. Hector tried to flee within the city, but Achillies killed Hector by stabbing him with a spear in the throat. Soon after this, in tyrimph, Achilles put Hector on the back of Achilles' chariot. As the chariot went, Hector's face bumped up against the ground. Achilles' had now killed the leader of the Trojans, and since the Trojans had lost their leader, they scattered across their allies to lead the way. But, Achillies saw this coming, so he broke the strength of the Trojans by killing Memnon, the prince of the Ethiopians, and Penthesila, queen of the Amazons. After this, the Trojans were left with no leader, spirit, confidence, or any want to go to battle anymore. After a while, Achilles wanted to have a wife, so he found a beautiful woman named Briseis, who was Hector’s sister! The two went on many dates and it was clear they were both meant for eachother. Eventually the two decided to marry each other, but as Briseis was getting ready, and the wedding was about to start, Hector's brother, Paris shot Achillies with a poisoned arrow in the Achillies heel, and Achillies died. Soon after the incident, Briseis was devastated that her own husband had been killed by her own brother, on her wedding day. My thoughts and the moral of the story of Achillies is that I find this story crazy because who vows to kill somebody and then marry their sister? Also, who kills their sister’s husband on the day of their wedding day? Also, should Paris have killed Achillies to avenge his brother, knowing that it would leave his sister heartbroken? Also why could Achilles mother have dipped him fully and turn him around rather than just let his heel become the only part that is human? The moral of the story of the Iliad (the story of Achillies) was that even though Achillies was the “main character/hero”, Homer made it clear that Hector was the real hero because Achilles just wanted power, but Hector wanted to keep his land and to protect his village, city, and people. That is the moral of Achilles and my thoughts on Achilles.

Who Was Odysseus?By Alexander F. KozlowIn this essay I will be showing you about Odyseuss’s status on an island, journey’s/adventures, love, fights, and monsters. At the time, Odysseus was the king of Itchia, one of the Ionian islands. Odysseus had two parents, Larteres, and Anticlea. Odysseus had a lovely wife and one kid, a boy who was named Telemachus. One of his heroic stories was when Odysseus achieved the capture of Troy which ended the war. Odysseus had Greek soldiers hide in an empty wooden horse that was hollow (the Trojan horse). When the Trojans brought the horse within the city, the Greek warriors busted out of the wooden horse and started invading the city. As the Greek soldiers swarmed out, the Greeks opened the gates for reinforcements to help win the battle. After taking control over Troy, and making a base for the Greeks, Odysseus went to the land of the “Lotus-Eaters”, which are a tribe that eat an unknown plant. With hard work, Odysseus rescues some members of his army who are tempted to eat the dangerous plant. Odysseus then encounters a monster called Polyphemus. Polyphemus is a monster who eats humans, and other animals. The cyclops is also a son of poseidon (the sea god). Eventually, Odysseus stabs Polyphemus in the only eye he has, and blinds him. Then, Odysseus escapes the monster by clinging to the belly of a ram.	After this, terrified, Odysseus traveled to the islands of the laestrygones. These are monsters that are much bigger than humans, but less of a threat to Olympus like the more well known creatures. like the Giants or Kronos. Also a fun fact about the Laestrygones is that Laestrygones are cannibalistic giants. The monsters destroyed eleven out of twelve of Odysseus’s ships, and the only surviving ship had Odysseus inside of it. This is surprising because Laestrygones are one of the stronger monsters and can chuck rocks out at you. Moving forward with the remaining survivors, Odysseus had arrived at the island of the enchantress of Circe. Circe was a witch-like woman who helped women become stronger and taught them how to become stronger. But for men, she would give them a drink, which is a spell in disguise to turn the men into pigs. She then turns some of Odysseus’s men into pigs, so Odysseus had to fight Circes fighters, then rescue his crew and cure them and go back to the ship and flee. Surprisingly Odysseus succeeded. Odysseus’s next adventure was very dangerous. Odysseus traveled to the land of the dead( the underworld) where he speaks to a ghost/spirit of Agamemnon, and he blinds the seer Tiresias. If you are wondering what seers are, they are a priest of Apollo (the sun god), and Seers can see the future just like gods/goddesses or Titans. Also, another word for Seers is Oracles. After blinding the seer/Oracle, Tiresias could no longer see the future anywhere. After this, Odysseus Odysseus learns how to avoid the wrath of Poseidon, and is no longer in danger by Poseidon (the wrath of Poseidon is a punishment for Odysseus killing one of his sons, the cyclops Polyphemus. Soon after, Odysseus passes by the Sirens (a creature who lures its prey and plays such beautiful songs that shows what a demigods favorite possession right in front of them, but Sirens trick their Prey by instead of what the prey values the most that is right in front them is actually water that Sirens use to drown their prey and then feed of their body), Scylla (Scylla is a monster that that snatches it’s prey in a flash, and then feeds on their prey), and Charybdis (this is a monster with a huge mouth that makes a whirlpool to force boats, and their prey into their mouth, and then eat their prey). If you are wondering where this is, in the mortal world, this is the bermuda triangle. In Greek mythology, it's called the sea of monsters. Also, that's why boats, planes, and helicopters never come back. Luckily, they get out of that area immediately and survive. Odysseus then reaches the island of a nymph called Calypso. Calypso fell in love with Odysseus, and kept him prisoner for seven years and told him that if he married her, she would give him immortality, and Odysseus would live eternity with Calypso. Odysseus refused Calypso's offer, and Odysseus was determined to go back to his family. After that, two gods named Athena (goddess of wisdom and strategies), and Hermes (Hermes is the god of theft. He also does tasks like delivering messages) came to rescue Odysseus and unlocked his cage so Odysseus was free again. After countless journeys throughout the Trojan war, Odysseus completes his journey and comes home to his wife and son. At first, Odysseus is only recognized by his dog, and a nurse. At first, Penelope (Odysseus’s wife) was not fond of Odysseus, so Odysseus asks for the aid of Athena to confirm Odysseus is Odysseus. When Penelope still doesn't believe Odysseus is himself, she makes him shoot with his old bow. Of course, Odysseus shoots it perfectly, and better than before because of all the training from the adventures. Then, with the help of Telemachus (a demigod) and two slaves, Odysseus kills all of Penelopes suitors (people who want to have a rlationship with someone). Soon after this, Penelope accepts Odysseus as her long lost husband, and king of Ithaca.	My thoughts about Odysseus is that he is amazing to go on so many deadly adventures and not get killed, and try to get back home to his old wife and son. Odysseus even had the chance to start a new life and become immortal with Calypso, but was loyal to his old wife and stuck with her. Also, after staying away from your family for twenty years is a pretty big deal. Odysseus was also not a villain which makes him even better. In my opinion Odysseus is one of the best demigods, not only because of his power, or strength, but because of his personality, thoughts, and loyalty. Those are my thoughts on Odysseus.

SummaryBy Alexander F. KozlowI enjoyed a lot about Capstone, like how I had to research a lot about the topic. I also liked how you had a whole week to complete one sub-topic which is enough to complete it thoroughly. I also like picking the pictures and generally being able to work alone without somebody giving me a bunch of organizers. All I need is a site for research, and a place to put research. I also liked the fact that you could put all your writing as a poster and present your writing that way. Also, if you spend your time wisely, you can do things in between instead of just doing capstone every day for hours.	I learned many things in capstone, like Hercules's life, other demigods stories, Greek mythology, and Roman mythology. I learned a lot because when you research about your topic, you start to become more interested in it. Eventually, as you gather more information, that information sticks to you. I could also use this information for the future because maybe in college they might teach you about Hercules, or other demigods, but I will already know a lot about them and will do great in the subject. I also will like the subject more because it will not be so hard for me.	Some challenges that I faced were the lack of pictures. I thought that I was really low on pictures, but I really had a good amount of volume for my pictures, but I added more anyways. At the moment, I have a very good volume of pictures, and all of my pictures have been cited, as well with all my sites that I used for research. I also faced the challenge of not having enough research, but then I realized I did not read all of the articles for my research. After that, I didn’t have much trouble. I have some very good advice for future capstoners. If you are worried about all the writing and effort, and research, don’t worry about it. For instance, do two paragraphs a day, and by the end of the week I guarantee you will have at least five or more paragraphs. This way you have time to enjoy yourself, play sports, do other homework, watch TV, hang out with friends, and anything you want. This also made capstone more interesting because you weren't constantly working. This helped me very much, and hopefully future capstone use a method similar to my method.	This project impacted me by showing me the story of demigods, Greek/Roman mythology, and how to organize my writing and save them to a place where I don’t lose my writing. I also know that some demigods were real and conquered cities and countries, but people just added a little bit of magic to the story, and soon Greek mythology was a well known mythology. The reason why people added a little bit of magic is to remember the stories of demigods like Hercules, Achilles, and other demigods.
