The raw fish, in fact, was first gutted, arranged in layers with salt alternating with cooked rice and kept pressed for a few weeks. This fermentation process caused an increase in acidity of the environment in which it was found, to the point that it could be preserved for entire months.

Modern sushi, the one we appreciate today, arrived later, around 1800 from a stall that sold food on the streets of Tokyo. Nigiri-zushi was born in this stall, i.e. sushi made up of rice morsels flavored with vinegar with slices of raw fish on top. This recipe required the fish to be marinated in soy sauce and salt, to last longer.

4 Color and emotion: This contrast is very striking and emphasizes Dovima’s petite figure which first draw Avedon to her.  The light also helps to produce a dream like feel to the photograph and creates a ‘conflict’ between light and dark- freedom and being imprisoned.

Avedon photographed the model known as Dovima (born Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba) in a studio and various Paris locations, including the Cirque d’Hiver.

7 Perspective and Angle: Avedon used a shallow depth of film making sure that Dovima was completely in focus. Although the elephants faces and trunks were in focus, the elephant’s feet were out of focus caused by the animals moving.

8 Cultural Significance: Acceptance and wisdom, affection for family and temperance. Health, insight and memory. In the animal world, the elephant is undoubtedly considered a sign of good luck, as long as the trunk is facing upwards

9 Historical Significance: Dovima with Elephants has deservedly established its prominence in Avedon’s career as well as in the history of photography. The photograph became the poster image for Avedon’s landmark exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1978 and, ultimately, no survey of the history of fashion photography can be complete without reference to this composition. In 2017, Time magazine canonized Dovima with Elephants as one of the ‘100 Most Influential Images of All Time,’ the only fashion image to be included in the illustrious list. Today, over sixty years since it was created, Avedon’s Dovima with Elephants continues to enthrall viewers with its enduring vision of 1950s Parisian glamour.

10 Personal Connection: I believe this photograph looks visually stunning and is very beautiful, although, nowadays would be perhaps frowned upon because of animal cruelty. The photograph itself was ahead of its time and shows both creativity and deep thought. I can see why this photograph made such an impact upon the fashion industry and still continues to do so
