Mountain Ranges may contain river channels that are formed through melting of ice glaciers and several solid valleys. Typically, locations of Mountain Ranges are within the areas of a hoirseshoe-shaped region called as the Pacific Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean Basin (Circum-Pacific Belt) that is characterized by frequent earthquakes and large volcanic eruptions or the Alpide Belt. Mountain Ranges are composed of numerous peaks with each of its own unique features. One thing that they have in common is having high altitudes altogether while holding a broad amount of water in there respective geographical locations. Weather conditions on Mountain Ranges depends on there locations on Earth, but most of the time, radical changes in temperature & weather happens from time to time. 

  • Mountain Ranges that forcefully run parallel to each other are accordingly known as Mountain Belts.

Geographically extending from the Southeastern France and Northern Parts of the Italy, large areas of Switzerland, a small portion of Southern Germany, and a tiny area from countries of Austria and Yugoslavia. The Alps peaks within 8,000 feet above ground and towering 15,782 feet above sea level (Mont Blanc in the Penine Alps). France has the highest mountain that is contained within this Mountain Range. The Peak of the Alps covered with ice and snow are considered as the most majestic natural sight in this continent. 

  • "Alpinism" or Mountaineering is believed to be originated from the Alps
  • Alpine Orogeny was an episodic process about 300 million years ago. During the Paleozoic Era, a sea was squeezed between colliding belts that formed the mountain ranges which were known as the Alpide Belt that covers Gibraltar, the Himalayas to Indonesia. 
  • The Alps were part of an Orogenesis that dates back from the Cretaceous Period, caused by the collision of Eurasian and African Belts

It is also known to be the Oldest Mountains in the United States of America. Appalachians stretches from Quebec in Canada to Central Alabama (1,500 Miles: Southwest). This Mountain System forms Eastern Continental divisions between rivers that gushes into the Atlantic Ocean and drains into the Gulf of Mexico. The Appalachians has more than 40 peaks that reaches over 6,000 feet. Mt. Mitchell in Northern Carolina is considered as the highest peak of the Appalachians with a height of over 6,684 feet. 

  • Formed during the Ordovician Period (480 million years ago) through Orogenesis 
  • The Appalachians were once an extension of the Calendonian Mountain Chain (today is located in Scotland & Scandinavia)
  • The Appalachians have also reached the elevations of other globally renown mountain ranges, such as the Alps and the Rocky Mountains

Described as group of jagged, snow capped peaks that runs through the Western Part of Northern America. Rockies is the Major Mountain Range in the Western North America. The Rocky Mountains includes all uplands and mountains of areas such as New Mexico, British Columbia, North Alberta in Canada, and the United States of America.  Length of the Rockies Mountain System approximately ranges 6,035 kilometers. Its peaks are mostly formed from a great upheaval of the Earth's Crust. Fossil Skeletons of Marine Animals and Rocks that are formed within the hot interior of the Earth are found within the sides of the mountains. Volcanism took place in the Rockies with the evidences of Geysers of Yellowstone National Park and Huge Lava Sheets from Idaho. Its highest peak is Mt. Albert that stands 4,401 meters. Rockies extend through Northern Alaska that eventually disappear in a series of ice-covered hills in the Arctic Circle

Consists of several mountain belts and a home to world's highest peaks. Stretches within a 1,500 mile curve covering Southern Asia from the Pamirs, West of the Great Bend in Indus River, and Eastward to the Great Bend of Brahmaputra River. The Himalayas Range forms a barrier that separates Northern India and the Plateau of Tibet. Some parts of the range are 200 miles wide. Recorded with an elevation of 1,000 ft. above sea level. Since ranges here differentiates in various parts, every climate can be possibly found here in the Himalayas. 

  • Originated about 80 million years ago during the Jurassic Era
  • Himalaya (a Sanskrit Language) - "the House of Snow" or "the Snowy Range" 
  • Mt. Everest is located here - the border between Tibet and Nepal with a height of 8,848 meters above sea level
  • Several peaks of the Himalayas are regarded sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism

Andean peaks usually rises over 20,000 feet which concludes that only the Himalayan Mountains and its adjacent ranges such as the Hindu Kush are taller than the Andes Range.  Due to its length, the Andean Mountain Range served as a barrier between the Eastern Pacific Ocean and the rest of South America. Because of its geographical location, Andes is a region for earthquake belts and active volcanoes found in 4 volcanic zones.

Andes is divided into 3 sections:
Central Andes
  • Chilean & Peruvian Mountain Systems
  • Some Parts of Bolivia
Southern Andes
  • Argentina 
  • Chile
Northern Andes
  • Columbia
  • Ecuador 
  • Venezuela 

  • Hypothetically speaking, Andes is a Mesozoic Tertiary Orogenic Belt of Mountain within the Pacific of Fire
  • Andes' Ranges were created due to plate tectonic processes caused by compression of the Western Rim of the South American Plate
  • Subductions of the Nazca Plate and Antarctic Plate caused landmass to rose onto greater heights (Andes)

This mountain system is Australia's most substantial mountain range. It is also the 3rd Longest Land-Based Range in the World. Australia's Tallest Mountain Ranges can be found in New Southern Wales and Eastern Victoria.  It lengthens 3,500 kilometers from Dauan Island off the Northeastern tip of Queensland, passing through the rest of the eastern coastline to New South Whales to Victoria and turning west that fades into the Central Plain at the Grampians in Western Victoria. Its name was given because this Mountain Range forms a watershed. The crest of the range is defined by a watershed or boundary between the drainage basins of rivers. 

  • Mouth Kosciuszko -  Australia's highest peak with a height of 2,228 ft. above sea level (a part of this range)
  • Rose during the Carboniferous Period (300 million years ago) when Australia collided with parts of South America & New Zealand
  • This mountain range serves as a settlement to Australian Aboroginal Tribes

Watershed- an area of land that drains all streams and rainfall onto a common outlet
Aboriginal- 1st people to live on a certain area or country (original people who lived there even before colonized)
