In the exposition of Alight, Scott Sigler introduced the setting and characters of the book. The setting is a planet called Omeyocan. I think that it takes place in the future, because they have very advanced technology. The characters introduced in the exposition of Alight are Em, the protagonist, and the rest of the group that she leads.

Protagonist

Throughout the book I learned that the protagonist, Em, is a very strong person. The book shows us that she is physically strong in the scene where she climbs to the top of the pyramid, something that should be impossible. It shows us that she is emotionally strong because even when she is at the breaking point, she never backs away; she will do anything to protect her people. I think that the author created the protagonist this way because the main character of the book is usually a leader. It is important for leaders to be strong, fearless, and brave- which are all qualities that Em has.

Theme

In my book, the author introduces the theme that you should never give up. I think that this is the theme of the book because every time they hit a dead end, they kept going. When they were running out of food and it seemed like there was nothing left to do, they didn't give up. Instead, they went looking for the people who they thought were living there. Also, whenever they were fighting, the group didn't ever give up. They kept going until they won. This theme reoccurs throughout the book.

In Alight, the author shows us that the protagonist, Em, is brave, strong, and protective. She is always willing to take risks, even if it is nearly impossible, to protect the group that she leads. For example, when they were trapped by a giant spider, their only way out was through a hole in a wall. She and Bishop were the only people left in the clearing, so she made him go first. Em always feels like it is her responsibility to protect people.

The setting of Alight takes place on the deserted planet Omeyocan that is in ruins. It seems like it's in the future because of the advanced technology. On page 168 of the book, Em talks to the room and it gives her information. Also, they have pedestals that project images, and the images are touchscreen. These things make me think that the book takes place far into the future.

Em changes a lot throughout the book. She becomes much stronger, both emotionally and physically. By the resolution of the book, a few people have died, including one of her closest friends. That changed her a lot. Em also became a lot more confident because she stops doubting herself.

The antagonists in Alight are the "grownups." The author refers to them as grownups because Em is a 12 year old, and the book is written in first person. The Grownups are centuries old, and, in my opinion, evil. They were the ones who put the children into coffins until they got to Omeyocan. As a result, the children are fighting against the Grownups.

Internal/External Conflict

I think that this book has two different conflicts. The internal conflict is Em trying to find out who she is. When they first woke up, nobody knew anything about themselves except for their age- 12. I feel that part of this book is about the group trying to find themselves. The external conflict in this book is character vs. nature. The children are trying to survive on the planet. All of the food that they find there is either poisoned or inedible, and the water is not safe to drink. Em and her group are struggling to survive.
