Letters and Cards

When I was little, I would always forget who gave me a card for a birthday or holiday, so I came up with the idea to keep them. I started the tradition on my 9th birthday, as of my last birthday, I have a large stack of cards from a variety of different events in the past years. I am grateful to 9-year-old me for the idea to keep the cards because now I can look back at all of them and relive all the amazing memories I have with each one. Doing this also made me appreciate the little things in life and look for the little joys in everyday life.

Kindergarten Schoolwork - Annie

In the back of my closet, in a huge box, I have all of the schoolwork and homework from both kindergarten and first grade. It really is not important to me at all, but looking back at all of the work, I get really nostalgic and emotional remembering younger me. It makes me miss my old school, my old class, my old self, and it kind of takes me back to time when life was so much simpler. Granted, I should probably throw it away since it takes up so much space, and is made up of hundereds and hundreds of papers. For some reason, I just haven't been able to give it up yet.

Maggie Brenner - Swim ribbons

I have been swimming since I was 5 years old. On the club team I have been swimming for since I was 5 years old, they award you with ribbons for every race you swim. No matter what place you get, you receive a ribbon with the date, swim meet, the event you swam, your place, and your time. While I do not have ALL of my ribbons from all of my years of swimming, I have a lot of them in a box in my closet. I have been tempted to get rid of them because there isn't a whole lot to do with them, but every once in awhile, I love to go back through them and see how far I've come. To swimming as a little 8 and under to swimming on the high school team, I think it's really amazing to be able to go back and use these ribbons to see how much progress I've made.

I've kept all of my notebooks and journals from all of my past school years. I like to go back and reread all of my "free-write" journal entries once in a while, which is usually just when I decide to go through my room and clean it. I actually started doing it on accident because I just felt the need to keep all my old school supplies "just in case". Since, I've thrown out all of my folders and binders but I still have the notebooks. Its just interesting to see what my mind was like when I was that little and to see how my thinking has changed.

When I was in kindergarten and first grade, my mom used to leave notes in my lunchbox, but they were not just normal notes scribbled on the back of a notepad. She would draw pictures with a funny or encouraging message on small cards that I began collecting. Each day, the lunch ladies would come over to see what my mom had drawn for me and would tell me how lucky I was to have her do that for me. Even now, I have still kept my collection of them, and occasionally look back to remember how excited I always was to find them.

One thing I have kept from my childhood was my Cabbage Patch doll. I actually won her in a contest on TV. Way back in the good old days, we used to come home from school and watch afternoon TV geared toward elementary students. As part of the programming, the TV station ran a contest where you could send in a postcard with your name on it in order to win a Cabbage Patch doll of your choice. My sisters and I all really wanted those dolls, so we all entered to win. In order to claim your prize, you had to be watching their station when they announced your name, then call into the station. Imagine my surprise when I heard my name called, realizing I had won! I was ecstatic! My mom had to arrange to drive me down to the TV station to pick out the doll I wanted. She had red hair and freckles, which somehow is the same as my actual daughter, who now owns my doll.

Logan Sokolofsky- Garbage Pail Kids

When I was little, I am not sure what age exactly, my uncle gave me a stack of what are called “Garbage Pail Kids”. They are little cards with realistic but also very strange looking cartoon people on them. I am not exactly sure why my uncle gave them to me but I have the faintest memory that he said they could be worth money as I got older. So, with this idea, I still have them today in my room in the same little box he gave me all those years ago. I kinda have the unsupported notion that they are slowly gaining monetary value every day or every week and then when I am say 50 or something, I can sell them and hopefully get some good money. In the meantime, they will continue to sit in my room, collecting dust, but still holding memories.

Sam Harbst: Stuffed Giraffe

When I was little, I won a stuffed giraffe by winning the ring toss game on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk. Although I had a few other stuffed animals, the giraffe was my favorite, and I kept it on my bed at all times. I still have the giraffe tucked away in my closet, and it serves as a reminder some of my fondest memories of my family's vacations to Rehoboth Beach. Going there yearly has been a family tradtion, which I cherish.
