The first inhabitants of Australia played ball games some of which involved kicking a possum-skin ball in the air. Those who arrived in the early nineteenth century brought their own ball games with them. Reports of small-sided, predominantly kicking games for money or other prizes are reported long before the first local set of extant rules for the Melbourne Football Club were written in 1859. Those rules were very similar to the Cambridge University rules of 1845, and those of John Hope’s club in Edinburgh of 1824.

Cricket has been played in Australia for over 210 years. Rather there are lots of different events/tournaments that teams play in. These events can get countries closer to each other. One example is the Ashes event which is a test match of England vs Australia. This test started when Australia started getting into cricket and there were no other countries besides the two that played it. Australia one the match and someone from the English side said that it was the end of cricket for England as it was invented in England so they should have one. The burned one of the bails from the wickets and put it into an urn and gave it to the Australian side.
