This was a system of government to run America as a new nation. This document contained two articles and unfortunately, it didn't do well. one of the strengths for this was establishing the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 which allowed the Northwest territories to have their own governments. The ordinance also banned slavery from this region. One of the weaknesses of this document was that congress wasn't allowed to collect taxes, it could only borrow money from states. In shay's rebellion, Daniel shay had to pay his taxes but couldn't because congress couldn't pay him for his service during the American Revolution. If he didn't pay his taxes the state of Massachusetts, where he lived in, could take away his farm. This lead to the rebellion.

Important compromises (great,3/5, and where to choose capitol)

The 1st issue at the constitutional convention was "How will the states and the people be represented in the new government"? The Virginia plan wanted to have a 2 house congress where the number of representatives was based on the population of each state. The New Jersey plan was to have One house in congress where the number of representatives was equal for each state. Both states argued until a new plan came up called The Great Compromise. It was a solution that the congress has 2 houses. One house would have representatives based on each state population and the other house would have each state to have 2 senators. The 2nd issue at the convention was "Should slaves count as people"? The northern states believed that slaves shouldn't be counted in population. The southern states wanted slaves to be counted in the population as a whole person. A solution called the 3/5th's compromise came up it explains that slaves would be counted as 3/5 of a person. The 3rd issue at the convention was "Where should the capitol be located"? Alexander Hamilton wanted it to be in New York but that location would cause to end slavery. Thomas Jefferson wanted the location to be on the Potomac River in the south but that location would only promote slavery. The compromise was to have the capitol in the Potomac river in its own area called the District of Columbia so no state could influence that place.

This is a system of government was made to prevent one branch of government from becoming to powerful. For example, the Legislative branch makes laws. The Executive branch can veto that law making it harder for the Legislative branch to pass the law. The Judicial branch can also declare that a law is unconstitutional making sure that it's now a law.
