The teacher models the reading or a thinking strategy that they want the students to learn. The teacher will demonstrate using a important text so that they are not “wasting time”. The teacher can go over it again if not all of the students understood what their supposed to do.

Now the teacher will use another short piece of important reading materials, but this time will have the students help them with the strategies. This is called shared reading and helps the students because that teacher is still in control, but is allowing the students to help them.

The teacher will release the students to be able to do it more independently. The students will now try out the strategies independently or in small groups. The teacher will then move around the classroom helping the students/groups if they need any help or have any questions.

This is the last step. Students will now use the strategies alone with minimal support from the teacher. The teacher now gives the students the full responsibility. They get to select the text, make there responses as they read, and have an understanding so they can actively join a discussion.

After reading you get the students up and out of their seats. You ask questions and give them spots in the room to stand in. These spots can be agree and disagree, there can be various ranges from strongly agree to strongly disagree and you can even have a spot for people who are neutral it just depends on the questions. As you ask these questions you will have the kids move to what their answer would be based on the question. You can then have some of the students explain their reasoning or can have them partner up wit someone that they think differently then and have them explain why they think that to each other.
