Interviewer: Okay. So, the first question is, what did you learn about HIV self-screening from the show?

Participant: I learned that there’s a kit and when you are ready, you can take it home or anywhere that is private and convenient for you and you test yourself using oral swab. Yes, that’s what I’ve learned. And also, when you get your results you should also go to the clinic for further generic test. It’s just normal, also you might get medication if there’s need.

Interviewer: Okay. Alright. And then PrEP, did you learn something about PrEP? 

Participant: Oh. Yes, I leant that you need to take PrEP like weeks before or a week before having unprotected sex, not that you should have unprotected sex, but it’s for, you know, like those emergency times, for example when the condom breaks. Not that you should have unprotected sex, you should always use a condom. 

Interviewer: Okay. After watching the show, would you feel confident that you, say that you know how HIV self -screening or PrEP work?

Participant: Yes. About the self-screening kit?

Interviewer: Yes, and PrEP. Do you think you feel confident that you know a lot about HIV self-screening and PrEP in terms of how they work? If so, could you please explain?

Participant:  I think PrEP is the pill that you have to take every day, and then the self-test kit you have to swab yourself, around your mouth, upper part and the lower part, around the teeth, then you insert in the liquid thing and then you wait for your results or 15 minutes.

Interviewer: Okay.  And then in terms of like access, do you also feel more confident that you know where you can get PrEP or an HIV self-screening kit?

Participant: I am not really confident where you can get it, the self- testing kit. There is… in the show, I saw that there were people randomly promoting it. So, I’m not really sure where you can get it. Probably the pharmacy? Because I never search for it or asked at the clinic. I’m not really confident about where you can get it.  Only PrEP - that I think I am confident that you can get in most public clinics.

Interviewer: Okay. So, what did the [MTV Shuga] scenes about HIV self-testing make you feel like?

Participant: They made me feel like it is something that is easy to do and it has utmost confidentiality.

Interviewer: Mhhhm

Participant: You can do it on your own and you don’t have to use, there are no… If you are afraid of needles, there no needles. No one has to know, no one has to know about your results. I think that’s something that is reliable in terms of confidentiality. If someone wants to be confidential about their results.

Interviewer: Okay. And then, now, how are your decision and motivation for HIV self- testing different from before you saw the show?

Participant: Slightly, I think slightly different because I learnt something about self-testing. I really didn’t know about it. I didn’t have that much of information. I didn’t even know that something like that existed.

Interviewer: Did Down South make you feel more motivated to get test, if so, why?

Participant: It’s not a question if I've tested before.  I think it is important to know my status so that I don’t risk someone else getting it, infecting someone else.

Interviewer: Have you been tested because of the show?

Participant: No.

Interviewer: Okay. And then, has the show been able to, or has the show influenced the way you would like to do your HIV test?

Participant: I think I would prefer doing it at the clinic because at home you are alone, you don’t have anyone else, anything can happen. At least when you are at the clinic there is support, there is also counseling. If you are doing it at home anything is possible.
