Let's start thinking about writing. As a learner pursuing a terminal degree, there are high expectations and standards you must meet. What I’m talking about here is elevating your thoughts, ideas, and knowledge to a level that makes you eligible to join the ranks of scholars, qualified researchers, and subject matter experts in your field. As a graduate with a Doctor of Business Administration degree, you will engage in ongoing dialogue, take part in symposia and meetings, and contribute to journals and industry publications.

Wikipedia – I know this seems like an obvious statement to make, but I see it all the time. The key here is understanding what Wikipedia is; it is an open, editable forum. It can be edited by volunteers, at any time. Those who contribute to this site may have particular views or interpretations. Because of the changing nature of the information on this site, you should plan to verify every detail found by using the trusted sources discussed earlier.

Blogs are interesting, but in most cases, they’re not written by scholars. Most of the time, bloggers have a particular agenda, and they are writing to persuade others, not necessarily to inform with provable facts.

White papers & conference papers are written to inform a particular audience at conferences, symposia, and meetings. Typically, these are based on internal information from a company or research and development facility. White papers may be full of facts and information, but the officers may need time to verify invalidate the findings before the research is eligible to be published at a peer-reviewed journal.

Dissertations are written by novice researchers. Dissertations are written by learners, like you, who are conducting research for first time. These documents is not subjected to appear review process and may or may not meet the rigors of journal publication. Well the information in dissertations is typically accurate, just remember that these are learning documents and should not be relied upon to support your writings.

Business magazines, newspapers articles, and 24-hour news media stations are good sources for current events. The information provided by the sources is designed to capture your attention, increase ratings, and generate revenue; the news and information from these types of sources is sensationalized.

With all of these other types of information, you will have to find peer-reviewed or scholarly sources to support your writing. This is not to say that the sources are not useful. Especially when you are asked to write on an unfamiliar topic, all of the sources are good for getting you acquainted with a subject. Certainly you’ve heard of the phrase “Trust, but verify.” This is especially true when you are writing at the academic level.
