Lesson Plan and Reflection

The goal of this lesson plan is to teach students how to explore and name their feelings and how to use coping strategies to address emotions in difficult situations. A difficulty for this plan has to do with timing. Timing is vital in terms of lesson planning. While you can not account

for every situation (students enjoying a part of the lesson and taking longer on it than anticipated, or students rushing through an activity and it taking less time than expected), there are things that can be planned and accounted for. In this lesson, students are asked a couple

of questions to begin the lesson and focus their attention. Students are then asked to check in using a 1-5 scale. There is a mindful movement video that is used to teach content along with a story of the

day. After all of this, there is an activity planned for students. The project includes folding a piece of paper and writing/drawing things in each section of the paper. Once the lesson is complete, the counselor still needs to have students fill out a post-assessment. This whole lesson is scheduled to last 30 minutes. I believe the time allotted to this lesson is not enough for elementary students. From kindergarten to 3rd grade, many students will have trouble with reading and writing effective sentences quickly. This itself will present a problem as there are many reading and writing parts of this lesson. This may not present as big of a problem for grades 4-5. In order for this lesson to fit into the allotted 30 minutes, the counselor may consider reducing the number of reading/writing questions and

leading a discussion after which students are able to draw their own responses. The other option would be to keep the lesson as is but increase the allotted time. With the lesson being “too long” for the time allotted this will impact the effectiveness of the lesson as students will be more

focused on completing the lesson than on the content of what they are learning.
