Bartleby is one of the most isolated characters in all of literature. What role does his environment play in this isolation? What attempts does the narrator make to connect with Bartleby? What is the outcome of those attempts?

Bartleby has shown to be isolated and disconnected from all the other characters throughout the story. Working in a corner of an office does not help his situation either. However, the narrator made multiple attempts to connect to Bartleby. For example, one of his attempts was when he wanted to know more about Bartleby. The narrator asked Bartleby about where he grew up and basic questions to get to know a person. Everytime a question was asked, Bartleby would shoot him down by saying he would prefer not to answer. By refusing to talk to his coworkers, he allowed himself to be isolated and disconnected from the world.

Bartleby is placed facing a window that has no view (views another brick wall) giving him no view into the outside world seemingly trapping him even more into the confined office. The Narrator trys countless times to leanr Bartlebys orgins and history by asking him questions but Bartleby does not want to answer any of the questions. The Narrator even trys to give Bartleby money to help him, offers to help him go back home, offers to get Bartleby a new job but nothing seems to work. Those Attempt lead to nothing as Bartleby refuse to give any effort in connecting. Bartleby eventually ends up in a jail some would argue the most isolating place in the world.

The role that his environment plays in his isolation is that he is stuck in the corner of the narrator's office with a screen dividing the two. Bartleby was closed from everyone and confined to the corner walls and his privacy screen. The narrator tried to connect with him by asking where he was from and trying to reach out and help him when he wanted to fire him. The narrator was also very patient with him and tried to give him smaller tasks to complete outside of the office like running to the post office. All of these attempts that were made were a failure and Bartleby did not want to interact with the outside world, complete his tasks, or go get dinner or go out for drinks with his coworkers.

Bartleby was hired to work in a Office Law firm. He feels imprisoned in the office, isolated from society. Later in the story the Narrator tries countless times to connect with Bartleby but he either gives no response or responds with "I would prefer not to" For example on page 16 “Will you tell me, Bartleby, where you were born?”“I would prefer not to.”“Will you tell me any thing about yourself?”“I would prefer not to.” Bartleby ends up disconnecting himself from everyone. socially.

Expansion on Lusine's - The environment of the office is not quite a place to socialize. The narrator does try to connect with him several times but the simple fact is if you are unwilling to connect then you will always be lonely. Besides this the narrator tells us that Bartleby was never seen outside the office. If you never leave a place and go out to the park at least on your own then you will never be able to make friends.

Since Bartleby was already a very reserved person, his environment did not help at all with his isolation. His working area was positioned in a corner and on top of that there was a screen confining him in his space; it cut off any opportunity he had to socialize. However, the narrator did try his best to get to know him better. He even attempted to assign him duties he believed would be beneficial to him (i.e the walk to the post office). Unfortunately, Bartleby never dove deeper into the conversations and would always refuse to give him answers because he "would prefer not to."

Bartleby's environment plays into his isolation because the people around him seem to be close to one another and rather lively whereas he is "bland" so to speak. The Narrator attempts to connect with Bartleby is to constantly contemplate what he's thinking and why he acts the way he does. He also tries to get to know him outright by asking questions about his background as well try to make him help out around the office. The outcome to every one of those attempts was Bartleby dismissing that he doesn't want to talk and/or do the things and retreat back to his spot in the office.

He also faces a window which is covered by another building. Bartleby is rarely interactive with anybody or anything in the story. Also, he didn't even want to move outside of the building once he was evicted, so he just roamed the halls of the building. He also rarely is able to get into conversations more than "I would prefer not to."

Bartleby's symbolism of isolation stems mainly from his environment. His invironment influenced his isolation since the walls of the office acted as a symbolism of seperation and overall gave a feeling of loniness to Bartleby's character. Additionally, when the office switched locations and Bartleby stayed behind, the new environment that was no longer the old office also gave a feel of isolation to Bartleby. In the story, the narrator tries to connect with Bartleby by offering him a job, allowing him to stay after doing no work, offering his home up if he wishes to stay there, and making sure he was fed well while in prison. All of these different moments only made Bartleby more and more isolated as he would continue to refuse these offerings.

Bartleby is in an environment where he is alone most of the time because he is a writer. His office in the story is in the corner near window panes which also plays part of his isolation. The narrators tries to connect with him by asking his birthplace. He also tried to jus talk softly and politely to him. The outcomes of this were nothing. Bartleby still just said, "I would prefer not to," and kept refusing to do the work asked of him. -E.B.

The many references to the walls, small quarters, and the dividers all contribute to showing how Bartleby is in his own little world. When the narrator tries to connect himself to Bartleby, it's usually in a pitiful sense as they both had rough beginnings.
