In Yann Martel's Life of Pi, Pi's encounter with the algae island is a large turning point in the novel as it is the first event to give him a sense of hope for the future when everything else seemed lost. This stage of the Hero's Journey is called the Resurrection: as Pi feasts on the island's food, water, and company, he is both physically and mentally revived. The tone of this section diverges from the typically dismal style of the rest of the book. However, when Pi finds the human tooth and learns of the island's carnivorous nature, the interpretation of the scene changes. The Resurrection is a stage where the hero is cleansed and purified; however, it is also where the hero has their closest encounter with death. If Pi were to stay on this island, any hope for his future would be stifled and he would die like the previous visitor of the island. As Pi realizes this, he begins to feel infuriated at the island rather than being grateful for it: "Bitterness welled up in me. The radiant promise it offered during the day was replaced in my heart by all the treachery it delivered at night" (282). The tone of the novel transforms quickly from being jovial to despondent and angry at the new revelation. Pi's contrasting feelings of bitterness after a pleasant day on the island further emphasize the fracture in his utopian world where he would've spent the rest of his life and the dramatic change in tone. Shown through Pi's Resurrection, Martel uses such stages in the Hero's Journey to develop a variety of dynamic tones throughout the novel.
