No Brasil, dados do IBGE indicam que em 10,3 milhões de lares (86,5%) a pessoa de preferência da família era uma mulher. Destes, em quase um terço (29%) as mulheres vivem com filhos, mas sem cônjuges, muitas das quais enfrentam desafios que vão desde dificuldades econômicas até a falta de suporte emocional e social.

A maternidade solo é uma realidade vivida por milhões de mulheres que, por diferentes razões; como abandono, divórcio, escolha pessoal ou viuvez, assumem sozinhas a responsabilidade de criar seus filhos.

O APP busca a criação de uma comunidade virtual que possa contribuir para a diminuição da sensação de isolamento e colaborar para a disseminação de informações confiáveis sobre maternidade, saúde, amamentação e direitos, de forma que as usuárias possam se informar e tomar decisões conscientes no cuidado com seus filhos e consigo mesmas.

Solo motherhood is a reality lived by millions of woman that for different reasons; like abandonment, divorce, personal choice or widowhood, take on the responsability of raising and taking care of hers children alone.

Mãe que assume de forma exclusiva todas as responsabilidades pela criação do filho, tanto financeiras quanto afetivas, em uma família monoparental. [A denominação mãe solo indica uma forma de parentalidade, desvinculada do estado civil.]

The app aims to create a virtual community that can help reduce feelings of isolation and collaborate in the dissemination of reliable information about motherhood, health, breastfeeding, and rights, so that users can become informed and make informed decisions about caring for their children and themselves.

E ainda, ‘’mãe solteira’’ tem conotação negativa, já que surgiu quando as mulheres tinham menos direitos do que atualmente. Isto é, no passado mulheres que não fossem casadas no papel eram muito mais julgadas do que nos dias de hoje. 

Inclusive, muitas decisões sobre a vida delas só poderiam ser tomadas legalmente com autorização do marido. Por exemplo, até 1962 as mulheres precisam de autorização do marido para trabalhar fora, conforme o Código Civil de 1916.

Diante de um contexto em que os maridos tinham tanto poder sobre as esposas, ser mãe fora do casamento era considerado transgressor. Logo, apesar de a expressão mãe solo ser atual, essa realidade já é antiga e exige atenção das pessoas.

It is very important to help the term “single mother” fall more and more out of use. As we can see, “single mother” does not fully reflect the reality of motherhood and can lead to misleading interpretations. After all, there are women who are in relationships but still raise their children on their own.

Furthermore, “single mother” carries a negative connotation, since the expression originated in a time when women had fewer rights than they do today. In the past, women who were not legally married were judged much more harshly than they are nowadays.

In fact, many decisions about their own lives could only be legally made with their husband’s authorization. For example, until 1962, Brazilian women needed their husband’s permission to work outside the home, according to the 1916 Civil Code.

In a context where husbands held so much power over their wives, being a mother outside of marriage was considered transgressive. Therefore, although the expression “mãe solo” (solo mother) is more current, the reality it represents is not new and still demands people’s attention.

Dificuldade na aquisição de itens básicos: Produtos de higiene pessoal e infantil são essenciais para o bem-estar das mães e de seus filhos, mas muitas vezes são inacessíveis devido à baixa renda.

Ausência de rede de apoio: Sem um sistema de suporte familiar ou comunitário, essas mulheres enfrentam desafios diários, desde a necessidade de conciliar trabalho e criação dos filhos até a sobrecarga emocional.

Falta de auxílio psicológico e emocional: A pressão de ser a única responsável por uma família pode levar ao esgotamento mental e emocional.
