He seems like a very selfish, arrogant, bitter, insecure person. Pretty much, someone, you don't want to be around for a long time or even friends with! "Tom Buchanan in riding clothes was standing with his legs apart on the front porch" That line from the story introduces Tom in a way and just from that I got bad vibes. Because body language is a thing and you can tell so much about a person from something as simple as that. This quote was followed up by Nick continuing to say, "Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward". This kind of reminds me of a shark. I would symbolize Tom's physical appearance as a shark and his personality like a ticking bomb. Like on the outside he is out for blood and very intimidating and you wanna stay away from him. His personality is like a ticking bomb because any little thing will make him "go off" or be rude and have a lot of smart comments and make things about him. Also just like a shark or a bomb you would want to stay away.

I thought of this exact thing while reading the story! For example, you would think Daisy and Tom Buchanan would be a happy family because of their riches and all the money they have and Tom is a former star football player and all that good stuff. But here comes the shocker, they aren't in a happy marriage. Tom is having an affair and here comes ANOTHER shock, Daisy knows... She doesn't even care because they have been together so long and plus she doesn't want to give up her lavish lifestyle. That's honestly so sad. And they probably have more problems that we will find out later as we read the rest of the story.

So we made it to chapter two and we've gotten to get to know the characters a little bit more. This also includes where they live so basically there are 4 main settings of the novel: East Egg, West Egg, Valley of Ashes, and New York City. So let's break it down, East Egg is where the rich live like Tom Buchanan, West Egg is still a very rich area and is like old money where Gatsby and Nick live, Valley of Ashes is "a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air." where Myrtle (Tom's Mistress) lives which is pretty ironic because she loves the lavish life but lives there... New York is just for the average person and connects all these settings. I feel like characters like Tom and Nick don't change their personalities as they travel to these different settings but I feel Myrtle does. She's from Valley of Ashes and it literally looks like what it sounds like which is ashes. But when she's in her apartment in New York with Tom she acts brand new. "She had changed her dress to a brown figured muslin, which stretched tight over her rather wide hips as Tom helped her to the platform in New York. At the newsstand, she bought a copy of TOWN TATTLE. and a moving-picture magazine and in the station drug-store some cold cream and a small flask of perfume." In this chapter, Nick invited to Gatsby's party. Eventually, it's time to go back home and Jordan is driving the car. Nick tells Jordan how bad of a driver she is she then says, "They'll keep out of my way," she insisted. "It takes two to make an accident." This statement relates to her social class because it shows how privileged she is. This also feeds into the stereotype that the rich are careless which is exactly what she's being. Also, it seems common in this story that the rich are never held accountable for their actions. Just like Tom for example he hits women and cheats on his wife and isn't held accountable most likely because of his social class. This also relates to real life where some celebrities are never held accountable for their actions. Like yes we're all human and we make mistakes but you also have to acknowledge your mistakes

A lot of things happened in this chapter so let's talk about it. We find out Gatsby's backstory. It starts with Gatsby going to lunch with Nick but on the way there he just starts talking about his life story... random. Nick doesn't believe him which is understandable because I wouldn't either. Later they meet up with Mr. Wolfsheim. We find out he is kind of shady because he thinks Nick is someone else but Gatsby clears that up and says, "This is just a friend. I told you we'd talk about that some other time." "I beg your pardon," said Mr. Wolfshiem, "I had a wrong man." So by this, we can tell something is going on between them. By this information, it implies that Gatsby is probably doing something shady with Mr. Wolfshiem because you are you hang around with. This was a super interesting and a bit funny chapter to read about because Gatsby and Daisy FINALLY see each other after 5 years. It is very awkward at first which is funny but then they got comfortable around each other and it was all good. In the chapter there is a green light mentioned to Daisy when Gatsby says "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock,” this reminds me of in Chapter 1 how Gatsby was looking off into a green light and Gatsby explained this signified Gatsby and Daisy's future together because when you think of green you think of good like a green light. This chapter was probably the juiciest one yet! We find out Gatsby's true origin story and where he really came from. Remember how he told Nick how he inherited all his money from his family because he grew up rich... HE LIED So pretty much he grew up with poor parents who were farmers. He didn't want to keep living that life he knew he was destined to be something more so he changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby a persona he came up with to get where he is now. We find out he started working for a man named Dan Cody. Dan Cody would party a lot and drink and when he died Gatsby promised himself to never drink. Gatsby is clearly in love with Daisy and Daisy is in love with Gatsby. Tom claims he love Daisy but I mean you don't cheat on someone you love and treat them poorly. It doesn't seem that Nick loves anyone in this story. I feel like the idea of love isn't as glamourous as people know love as. This is kind of like toxic love because although Gatsby treats Daisy good and says he loves her he wants her to be a certain way sometimes and she's not the person he imagined in his head but he still wants that happy ending with her. Tom is the worst partner you can have so I feel this story shows you red flags in people like Tom. I think this novel shows a pretty good example of the American Dream through Gatsby. Because first off the American Dream means hope that coming to America you can become successful. Gatsby did just that he had hope and used it until he got where he wanted to be in life which was a rich businessman. "For over a year he had been beating his way along the south shore of Lake Superior as a clam digger and a salmon-fisher or in any other capacity that brought him food and bed."  He had to work for what he had and had hoped he was going to be successful. As we know his name was originally James Gatz but "He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career--when he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior." I feel like it relates because Romeo and Juliet is all about forbidden love and it kind of reminds me of the forbidden love Gatsby and Daisy had throughout the story. Romeo and Juliet were forbidden to see each other because Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was a Capulet and those two families had a feud against each other so they had to work around it. In The Great Gatsby Daisy and Gatsby had a long history together and at the time when they wanted to be together they couldn’t because they were part of two different social statuses and different groups, Gatsby was poor and Daisy was rich and that wouldn’t have been accepted by her family. But now that they met again they have another obstacle and that's Tom Buchanan. As we know The Great Gatsby signifies the American Dream and Gatsby’s ultimate American dream was to be with Daisy and I feel vice versa for Daisy and in Romeo and Juliet their ultimate dream was to be with each other as well but it was sadly forbidden. I feel like this has to do with the world because for example the past, people in the world try to replace their past all the time, especially the rich I feel. They try to make things they did go away if it doesn’t match their brand or just mistakes they’ve made in the past in general. Just like how Gatsby used his money and kind of fame to make up stories about his past life even though we eventually found out the truth. Gatsby’s present takes place in the roaring 20s which was an actual time and I feel his present really represented the 1920’s. The rich would throw big parties and celebrate all the time and people would do things like rebel as well. As for Gatsby’s future he didn’t know what was coming to him and I feel like that's with everyone we don’t know what the future holds ahead of us. We just are along for the ride of life.

I feel this relates to me because I have a lot of goals in life and I’m still young trying to figure myself out and how I’m going to complete those goals. Gatsby also had life experiences where he had to learn to grow up fast and I feel like I’ve also had to mature and grow up faster than expected. But I still feel like I have a lot of maturing to do in my life. If anything that I’ve learned from this story it's that the mind is powerful and you can achieve anything you put your mind to. I personally know people who came from nothing and made it and achieved their American Dream and it all starts with you. Gatsby didn’t want his old life anymore so he told himself what he was going to do, that's the first part, and then he went and achieved those goals and I want to be like that.
