Calypso is a Greek Goddess, but can also be considered as a nymph. She represents beauty and enchantment. Calypso uses her powers of beauty and enchantment to lure people onto her island. Symbolizing love over pride as she never really cared about anyone. The word "Calypso" is used from the Greek word that would typically refer to someone that hides away or is reclusive. Which would explain why she is alone on her island all by herself. Calypso can also be associated with the sea as her island is surrounded by water and people wash up on her shores.

History of Calypso

Calypso is the daughter of Titan Atlan. She is a Goddess of renowned beauty, she also has healing powers. She kept Odysseus captive on her island for 7 years. She hoped that he would fall madly in love with her. She then let him go because she felt bad for his wife and son who was waiting for him at home and she was orders to set him free due to Zueses orders. She offered Odysseus.

Calypso was cursed to stay on Ogygia forever by the gods. She was cursed because she supported her father in the Fist Titan war. her other curs was for wounded heroes to wash up on her island for her to heel. That is when she kidnaps Odysseus.

Function in the Odyssey

Calypso has one main function in the Odyssey. Calypso imprisons Odysseus during his journey home. However, since he landed on her island, he was stuck there for over 7 years. In the source above it says, "Odysseus, prisoner for seven years on the island where she lives and forces him to be her lover". Calypso wants Odysseus to be her husband forever, however Odysseus sits on her island and cries because he wants to return home to his wife, Penelope. Calypso knows that Odysseus will never love her back When the Gods tell her to release Odysseus from her island, she complains to Zeus about how unfair it is.Yet, she ends up letting Odysseus go despite what she wants to do.
