1/ Il s’agit de porter un regard interrogatif sur l'oeuvre : regarder très attentivement l'oeuvre en face de soi en se posant des questions.

2/C'est savoir organiser sa réflexion et ses connaissances en fonction de l'oeuvre. En effet, on analyse pas de la même manière un tableau de la Renaissance et une photographie du XXème siècle.

3/ C'est faire appel à ses connaissances dans divers domaines, en prenant en considération la période historique ou le nom de l'artiste par exemple.
