https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf Made with an informed Nicole en-us 2018-12-10 18:09:11 UTC 2018-12-20 18:18:45 UTC hello@padlet.com nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/313538510 White privilege has been apart of the American Society since colonial days, and not much has changed since.  Many white people go throughout their lives oblivious to the luxuries they are ensured such as wealth inheritance and not seen as a threatening presence.  It’s also the simple things such as get flesh colored band aids at the store and having a hair care aisle, mostly all for straight hair.  White privilege is knowing and seeing racial inequality in everyday life, but staying silent about it.  Some white people feel attacked and discriminated against when the idea of white privilege is brought up because they don't think they are privileged, but it's strongly backed up that whites are privileged in ways they don't think of. If white privilege were to be erased from our society, white people would have to start recognizing their advantages and speak up against the injustice.

It was demeaning to African Americans, and it was an uneasy thought of how inappropriate it was that people laughed about it.  In present day, blackface is starting to make an appearance again mostly from the younger generation who don’t know the history affiliated with it.  The issue with blackface now is ignorance on racial history.  There is a lot of racism history that is not taught because of how bad it was, but it needs to be taught so history doesn't repeat itself as it is right now.]]> 2018-12-13 00:40:53 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314093246 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314393656 In today’s society, people tend to hear one story and only believe that story.  We lack thinking of the other side of the story or letting someone tell their side of the story.  These bad habits cause the mass of people to look down or not care about a group of people and start to see the differences in each other. It’s unfair because they don’t have the ability to tell their story.  Just like in Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie couldn’t tell her side of her marriage with Joe because of the social norms that were in place.  Consequently, the entire town judge her for marrying Tea Cake and running off with him.  The one story through Joe’s eyes was the only story people believed, and that’s what happens in today’s news media.  We perceive certain people and groups as one thing based on what we hear and don't let them tell their story which is unfair and inhumane.  ]]> 2018-12-13 18:20:17 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314393656 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314406446 Racism occurs from the attitude one race has towards another although a smaller amount of people think discrimination comes from government laws and actions.  Fear of discrimination has influenced decisions on seeking medical care, calling the police when in need, and attending social events.  The fear of doing simple things is a very concerning issue that all has to do with attitude.  Many things have been done to push people further apart and see the differences in each other and not the similarities.  We are so quick to treat someone different who is different than us, but why are we like that?  The attitude is a pre existing issue that’s been around since colonial days, like white privilege, but the circle needs to be broken so people feel welcomed and aren’t scared to get necessary help.  

]]> 2018-12-13 18:42:13 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314406446 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314426184 Race is such a touchy subject that people don’t talk about it to fix it.  Having courage and having the uncomfortable talks will make the difference in the future for the children.  Color blindness is dangerous because the problem is ignored and not being fixed.  Everyone and the quality of life and ideas will be greater with greater diversity because of the different views and perspectives.  Diversity is when we will achieve greatness, but we need to recognize the ability of what we could be with diversity.   

]]> 2018-12-13 19:13:59 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314426184 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314789981 There are some activist groups out there fighting for people they know nothing about.  For example, an all white religious activist group fighting for LGBTQ rights.  The group of dominance tends to think they are superior and better than the group they’re fighting for.  It’s hard to fight for people you are unfamiliar with.  To start being more effective instead of faithful, people need to become immersed and meet people who are unlike them.  We can become like-minded when we recognize and work through different perspectives, views, gifts, and flaws of each other.  The power of what a group could be like with diversity and different views could be so great but it's successes are unknown because no one does it.  ]]> 2018-12-14 19:08:02 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/314789981 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315270956 In a lower income family, the life is different.  Because they are constantly under financial stress, they are probably not home as much as a middle class family is.   Mental health disorders can arise from the neglect and stress of not being able to pay bills, and people of this income tend to not have much access to healthcare.  After not being able to provide for their family or themselves, an unimaginable amount of mental disorders and stress have arisen, and they can’t do much about them.   Being apart of a lower socioeconomic class tends to lead to family and self problems.  ]]> 2018-12-17 17:46:46 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315270956 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315621781 Education follows an economic pattern too like family life.  Typically, lower income families are housed in the same area and all attend the same schooling, and it’s proven that education in lower income neighborhoods is not as good as education in wealthier areas.  Also in some cities, there are suburbs of minorities and they obviously aren’t making as much as the white male in that city.  Socioeconomic class puts children a step behind or ahead in education, something they should all be able to maximize, and being a person of minority, is a couple more steps behind.  

]]> 2018-12-18 17:39:36 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315621781 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315634628 Income affects so many aspects of social and emotional well being throughout a society.  Income is a materialistic thing that doesn’t heavily affect the quality of life, but what does affect the quality of life as a society is the gaps between the rich and the poor.  These gaps push humans further away from each other and cause us not to want to help each other and be equal.  As said in a few other of my entries, as a nation, we tend to see the differences like differences in affluence in people instead of the similarities.  The quality of life can improve if we make the economic gaps smaller and stop seeing someone as their differences from you, but as someone who is similar to you.  ]]> 2018-12-18 18:07:55 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315634628 nicole_villinski https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315961112 Socioeconomic status and the overall well being health has a correlation.  The lower the SES, the lower one's health is.  People in lower income areas tend to be exposed to more harmful chemicals, have poor health habits, and less access to health care.  All of these add up to poor health, but the people are unable to pay for their healthcare because of their income.  Healthcare is a necessity, but it is seen as a luxury in our society.  Again, the income gap is pushing us further away from each other.  People think they are better than the person next to them just because they make more money, but that is not who we should be.  Money is a materialistic ideal, and human connection is an everlasting feeling that is constantly not appreciated because of the differences people see.  ]]> 2018-12-19 17:58:44 UTC https://padlet.com/nicole_villinski/8jdhsql9i0qf/wish/315961112
