As I mentioned in last week about my plans for this week, I have completed all my to-do list as I planned. Counting costs, set selling price, looking for packing boxes, creating logo for my business are the things that I have done this week.

Since I am going to start my own business soon, I have learn counting costs and setting a reasonable selling price from my brother who is an accountant. Some points to remember here are understanding and knowing how much profit to earn, how to adjust the selling price when having new flavors of tarts, as well as to survey the market price beforehand.

Creating logo is the most challenging part for me. A simple and unique logo is what I looking for in order to attract and impress my customers. I collected some opinions from my friends who are studying graphic design, and at that moment I realized everyone has their own strength and capability, learn to appreciate and seek help from others instead of blaming yourself for being imperfect.

It is not an easy mission to be accomplished by one alone. As a baker in this posting, seeking helps from other professions such as accountants and designers. However, I am indulging in this project!

I am now giving out free custard tarts to my friends and relatives, not only to collect some reviews for the next improvement but also to share the happiness with my loved ones.

Buying multiple baking ingredients at different shops as some of the ingredients are selling at a lower price than the others is the difficulty I encountered. After discussion with accountant, he suggested I to buy all the ingredients at one shop which having most of the baking ingredients I want at a lower price because petrol fee is wasted if I need to visit different shops to have my all ingredients prepared. After taking the time, petrol, and effort into consideration, I am able to cope with this issue.

The designs have been finalised and order forms has been prepared for T-shirt orders to be taken. Promotional posters has been designed via Canva. Important details that are needed to be put in the order form was revised and finalised before releasing it. Few other order forms was referred as examples in order to educate ourselves with the important required details to be put in the order form.

To choose a simple and convenient platform for order placement including payment details and order details. This would make the purchasing procedure simpler and convenient for customers.

I was curious and excited to release the order form as I was thinking how the responses would be. At the same time, I was little worried since this is very new and there is no any previous experience in starting and managing business.

To create a promotional poster and order form

Concerns regarding how attractive/effective the promotional posters would be and how convenient would the platform that has been chosen for order form. After getting few feedbacks and inputs from some experienced seniors who have done business previously,we managed to get some best ideas for the promotion and order form.

To start collecting orders and promote the product to targeted customers effectively.

2. I went to several courier service to survey their price rates and fortunately, I am able to choose a courier service with the least expensive one. I also already decided on the price for my products which is affordable for my future customers. As for the promotional posters, I am still editing them as there are some changes to be done. My followers on my instagram has also been increasing since the last time I checked, which made me so happy. I may not have hundreds of followers yet but to me, I am grateful enough to see my instagram growing.

3. By doing a survey to compare the price rates between various type of courier service, I have trained myself to be able to communicate properly with others, as I am struggling to ask things in orderly way. That is because I know only a little regarding delivery service available near my home and how things work there. I’ve learned to sort my mind and able to deliver my questions properly to the courier services’ workers. Another point to remember is to use various hashtags when posting in the instagram as it can help to expand the audience and get more reach.

Not so much change of feelings from week 1. But I can say that I’m still ‘fighting myself’ as I am the only person who can push myself. Nevertheless, I’m proud of myself because I have overcome my hesitancy and fear of starting this business.

5. One good thing from what I did that I can practice now is ‘Just do it’.

I guess when it somes to something you are afraid of, or when you have doubts on yourself, it is the best if you just go for it. We may not know what the outcomes will be but it is better to try and see it for yourselves. Besides, most of the time, it always seems impossible until it is done.

6. I am concerned on the price that I put for my products, as I worried it may be too cheap that it barely generate profits or too expensive that no one would like to buy them. This is mainly because of the price for delivery and postage service exceeded the price for my products. I had to do some calculations to come up with the best price. I also asked my family members for their opinion regarding the price range. By that, I am able to see other people’s perspective on the affordability of the products.

For the week 2 of my Elective Posting, I have checked most of my to-do list as I have planned last week. I have surveyed the cheapest courier service to send throughout Malaysia. Besides that, I did a photoshoot for my product for the Instagram page content. Once I have prepared the pictures and planned what to post, then opened an account and started off with a welcome post. As I need to gain followers to reach more people, I have sent the Instagram link to all my friends and family. The products are in ready stock now.

At first, I feel curious about the response I’m about to get. Instead, I was surprised that all my friends and family supported me by following the page and even helped me to promote it. On the other hand, I was excited as I like photography. Before I took pictures of the product. I have watched several videos and examples on how to make photos look professional which helped improve my skills in photography. I actually enjoyed taking those pictures.

Since this is freshly started business, I need to attract customers for them to try my product. Hence, I have decided to give out a small gift for the early birds. For week 3, I have planned to post more picture on Instagram about the benefits of my product and and interesting pictures to attract customers. Beside that I will be launching my product on Tuesday. So I need to prepare to get orders and start packaging if get orders from customers.

For week 2, I already updated some promotional materials such as posters on my Instagram account and created a logo for my project, Farrr’s GO as shown in the picture. I used Canva app to create the posters and it turned out to be quite easy using the app and it helped me a lot as a beginner. I’ve decided the merchandise to be sold and picked the supplier based on my previous survey. Other than that, I’ve set up the selling price for my product based on the market price, my budget and the profit that I would like to gain. Throughout this week, I mainly focused on promoting my business on both my telegram channel and Instagram in order to gain customers. From my promotion, I estimated the amount of product or merchandise that need to be ordered from my supplier. Therefore, I already ordered some merchandise from my supplier and the estimated arrival will be around one or two weeks from the release date of the merchandise.

Points to remember from week 2 is the importance of promotion. We all know that marketing strategy or promotion is an important aspect of a business. I’ve learnt the appropriate platform or channel to promote and market my product in order to gain the targeted buyers or customers. Different kind of products require different kind of platform for promotion purpose and I think I have chosen the right one for my business. Other than that, consistency is a very important point in promotion, for example, we need to constantly share the posters so that it reaches a lot of people and later gain us some new customers.

It is actually quite challenging to run a business especially as a beginner because there are a lot of factors to consider such as the budget, the promotional activities, the supplier and many more. Sometimes I do feel kind of stress and afraid that no one going to buy what I’m selling and therefore I’m on cloud nine every time there is a buyer. Running a business sure is fun although it is challenging since it can improve our social skills such as when we are dealing with the supplier and also customers.

One good thing that I can practice from doing business is good communication skills. Communicating is a very crucial thing when it comes to business. With good communication skill, we can attract a lot of buyers and customers to come to our store again some other time. With good communication skills also can help us a lot is our daily life or in a life of a doctor for example.

I think one of the difficulties that I encountered was to decide on the best promotional materials that can attract people easily once they saw it and also to design it since I never good at designing posters. In order to cope with this, I decided to use Canva since it is the easiest apps for designing posters especially for beginners. It also has a lot of template to be used so that I don’t have to design it all from scratch. This app has been very useful and it helps a lot. Other than that, I also have some difficulties to boost my promotion, so I also have been asking for help from my friends to help share the poster.

For next week, I would like to continue promoting my product to gain more customers while waiting for the one that I ordered to arrive all the way from Korea. 2. How is your progress?

I am doing well, I mastered my task of filling up the tender documents. I do not need to refer much or ask every single thing to my colleagues anymore. When I send my documents for my supervisor to check, there are not much error. I also manage to understand the terms used that I used to struggle before.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

So for my second week, I was assigned to convert pdf document of the pricing list in the tender to microsoft excel so the quantity surveyors can calculate every single item and come up with a price. Once the price for everything is calculated I have to transfer them into the tender, doubke check to make sure its tally and before submiting. Pricing is a term used when subcontractors list down the price estimation to complete a project offered by a company. For example, a company which does civil construction but also has a cleaning license can offer their project that they received from the government after they won the bidding process to interested contractors who do cleaning work to sub in the project for them. So these contractors who sub in the project for a different company who initially got the job is called subcon.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I feel very excited in going to my sevond week as I think first week went well for me. I adapted well and made some new friends who. are very nice to me. I do fear that I will face more challenges in doing things that I have not done before, new tasks but I feel optimistic in completing them as I feel I have good people I can go and refer to.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I would say, I know how to use microsoft excel now which will be convenient in the future. I know it is small but it is something meaningful that I just learned especially knowing myself very well.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

To be honest, I fear doing task that requres me to use software. During my posting, spss for public health really scared me, so I practiced a lot in order to do well. In my workplace, they assume that I know how to use microsoft excel so they assigne me to convert pdf document into excel the. rearrange the items from the documents according to a certain format. I took the courage to ask my supervisor to show me an example, I felt embarrassed because it was actually pretty basic Excel skill which I do not take the liberty to learn after all these years. Once I got the hang of it, I felt a great satisfaction to be able to master something new and also grateful for my supervisor’s understanding and patience in guiding me.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)

For week 3, I will continue with my tender documents filling task, as it is my primary task and also do some Excel work when needed to. I am really looking forward to next week as I will be attending my first site visit for a future potential project.

2. I have created an Instagram account and plan to use this social media account to advertise my product. On the other hand, I spend times on creating posters to be posted on Instagram namely, the promotional poster, and countdown posters. I attach my contact number and link to my WhatsApp in the bio of the account, this ease the people for placing order. I had rebut the idea of mine, using google form as it will be lengthy for customers.

3. This will be a unique point to remember. When I am designing the posters, I have hard time getting the right colour for the background. Therefore, I approach one ex-schoolmate of mine for help, she is currently pursuing in the Bachelor of Design. She introduced me to colour wheel which very much ease my worries. So, the point to be remembered is, arts are not non-distinctive but have a fundamental guideline.

4. This week is considered a simple week for me, as I only need to do primitive preparation. I am feeling generally relaxed and happy.
My thoughts for this week was more on sales. I think I can get more sales if I promote it on other social media and get help from my friends to share my promotional post.

5. Marketing skills will be something I could further enhanced. Apparently, all kind of career will involve marketing plans and strategies even including medical fields which more clearly seen in the private sectors. Marketing skill does not involve gaining profit alone but also promote the to people the product they are needing.

6. As stated above, I faced a little difficulties in designing the posters. However, they are overcome smoothly. I have certain concerns on my sales. My hometown is a small suburban town with little population. Therefore, the sales may be not as well as expected. I suppose the people here will prefer cakes from local bakeries than mine. Therefore, instead of selling to single individual, I will like to try selling them to local café and shops.

7. The plan for week 3 will be taking the order and appoint date for cake delivering. As been mentioned in previous padlet, I finally decided to offer the free delivery service. 2. How is your progress?
For week 2 of my elective posting, I brought my friend which interested to become an Amway Business Owner (ABO) to visit the HQ in Petaling Jaya. The main purpose I brought him to the HQ is because I want to convince him that this Amway business is legit and trusted. I understand that some people are not well exposed to the business. Some of them have been experienced being scammed by the irresponsible scammer which still active outside there. They are traumatized and gave up in business even though they really want to find an opportunity in business. Thus, the best initiative is by bringing them to the HQ and give them opportunity to observe and make their own decision.

3. Points to remember from week 2!
Visiting Amway HQ was a very good experienced. When I entered the main entrance, there was very aesthetic inside the HQ. I saw many people shopping at the store. All products are available there and everyone who has registered as ABO or Amway Privileged Customer (APC) will get 25% discount for every purchase. I introduced some products to my friend and recommend him to buy. Then, we walked to the cafe. Unfortunately, the cafe was closed. My mentor, Mr. Clarence was waiting us at the meeting room near to the cafe. We met him there and he continued with Show The Plan (STP) session to us. He taught us how to start the business. After finished STP session, Mr. Clarence brought us walked around the HQ. The interesting moment was when he brought us to the warehouse inside the HQ. The warehouse is operating 24 hours daily. Then, he also introduced to us other products including Nutrilite, Artistry, ESpring Water Treatment System (water purifier), Atmosphere Sky (air purifier) and etc. For me, this is one of the best experiences in my life.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I was very excited because I have an opportunity to bring my friend to the Amway HQ and introduced him to this kind of business. Even though I just started my business, I felt proud of myself because I gave this great opportunity to myself and try to do something that I have never did before this. For me, we have to moving out from the our comfort zone to make sure we are always growing and moving forward. I felt very happy surrounded by many positive people around me that always keep supporting me in everything I did especially my parents, family and friends. At least, I made one person interested to join this business in a just a few days after I started my business.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!
One good thing from doing this business is self confidence. I realized that I have improved myself in term of self confidence. I confident enough to meet people to talk about the business. I confident enough to communicate to strangers and show the business plan. I become more confident to make my own decision with guidance from my upline.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
One of the difficulties in this business that I encountered was rejection. For example, I was show the business plan to my bestfriend, however he rejected it and decided not to join this business with me. I think it is normal when I promote some products and people were not interested to buy it. Thus, I have to prepare mentally and emotionally and be ready to face any rejection from other people. I always remember a quote from my mentor, "everything is hard before its become easy". This word always motivate me to keep moving forward and never give up in whatever I do.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
For the next week, I planned to find more ABO and APC. I will make sure I can get at least 3 ABO's in this month. I also plan to approach my Instagram and Facebook followers to show the business plan and promote some Amway products through my social media. 2) I managed to come out with a special dessert which is Tiramisu made with Kahlua! Although it is a well known dessert but it was my first time selling it. Most of the Tiramisu sold in market does not contain coffee liquor, so I thought I can make a special one. Out of expectation, it was not welcomed by Kuantanese. I only managed to sell 3 boxes. However, three of my customers are satisfied with the Tiramisu that I made.

3) Points to remember from week 2: it is hard to sell this new product because my customers are not looking forward to this new dessert as compared to signature creampuffs.

4) I felt very sad because the sale did not meet my expected target. It was a disappointment but through this experience, I learnt to be more patient and calm to face any obstacles in life.

5) As I mentioned, be calm and patient towards anything that I do.

6) As I mentioned last week, I had difficulties in replying customers, promoting products and collecting orders at the same time. I tried to be more organised and systematic by listing down what I have to do first.
