“Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world.” Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance. On April 22nd, 2001, the world was introduced to the DreamWorks character Shrek. Shrek was an ogre that lived a life in solitude away from various fairy-tale characters like talking donkeys and dragons. Shrek prided himself by living alone by making large posters saying "Keep Out" and "Ogre Ahead", and by also saying that he wanted to build a ten-foot wall around his home to keep everyone out. You soon find out that Shrek wants to keep everyone out because they judge his character before they know him. He claims that others look at him and think that he is a scary monster just because he's ogre, but he actually is a sweet-sensitive soul. Throughout most of the movie Shrek lived in solitude and had a simplified life.

“The name of the nearest friend sounds than foreign and accidental: to be brothers, to be acquaintances, -- master or servant, is then a trifle and a disturbance.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature. When I think of someone who is self-reliant I think of the T.V. character Ron Swanson from NBC'S T.V. show Parks and Recreation. In the television show Ron spends most of his time alone, and does like to bother other people nor does he like other people bothering him. For example in the clip over to the right, Ron is bothered when an internet website offers him something he might be interested in buying by using cookies. This then continues for him to search his address into Google Maps, to which he throws his computer into the dumpster outside. This shows that Ron values and prioritizes his privacy proving him to be a perfect image of being self-reliant.

“Let everyone mind his own business, and endeavor to be what he was made.” Henry David Thoreau, Conclusion. In Disney's version of The Little Mermaid, the main character Ariel is a mermaid and falls in love with a man, Prince Eric, who lives on land. Logically speaking this was not an intelligent choice for Ariel to do as her father has a role against any contact with the human world. Ariel goes against her father's rule, and then decides to become human. To be with Prince Eric she went to the sea-with, Ursula, to become human; by doing so she ended up turning into Ursula's prisoner. In order for Ariel to not be her prisoner her dad, King Triton, gives up his role of King of the Sea and gives it to Ursula. This leads into the main of climax of the movie that almost results in Prince Eric, King Triton, and Ariel dying. This all could have been avoided had Ariel not fallen in love with Eric, or had told her dad about her feelings instead of going to Ursula.

“The surface of the earth is soft and impressible by the feet of men; and so with the plant which the mind travels.” - Henry David Thoreau, Conclusion. Many people remember Bear Grylls for his many T.V. shows that shows him hunting and eating raw animals, drinking his own urine, and surviving the wild. Grylls is known for his crazy actions on his T.V. shows, and is known for also inviting several celebrities to be on his show. When you watch just one of the television's episode's you can see how he using every bit of nature to survive out in the wilderness. This can correlate to how Bear Grylls shows the importance of nature.

“Shall a man go and hang himself because he belongs to a race of pygmies, and not be the biggest pygmy the he can?” Henry David Thoreau, Conclusion. Throughout Steve Roger's role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe he has shown many different example that would correlate to nonconformity, but in this particular assignment I'm going to focus on one example. This example starts in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). When Steve Rogers becomes the Captain America icon he doesn't, as normal superhero's do, become cocky, ignorant, or even look down at "normal people". Instead he becomes humbled by his new super-human strengths and abilities, and gladly takes on his new role to save the planet from evil. Rogers does not conform to becoming a stuck-up super-human, but keeps his values and morals that he had even before he was a superhero.
