I have also been setting them writing assignments that are not graded but give me an opportunity to evaluate their writing and give them feedback.

This year almost all writing assignments were just meant to prepare my kids for the regents. 

For next year I would like to introduce more writing for my students. I dont want to bury them in assignments. Once we felt confident in their ability to write SPA paragraphs, we moved on to argumentative essays. I like the idea of giving kids a prompt and then having them write for the whole period. I would follow the lesson plan the teacher left for the student. In my school, ELA teachers focus more on reading than writing.

I sort of regret not assigning any essays in my classroom. I thought by doing so I would be setting them up to fail or cause them frustration because I didn't think they knew enough Spanish to best express themselves. Looking back at it now I think I should have pushed them in an ungraded assignment
