Alpacas/Llama's spit on animals making them feel threatened, upset, or are attempting to compete for food in hopes of causing them to back off. Due to Alpacas and llama's being domesticated animals, many humans have been the target of this instinct. Although it isn't dangerous, Alpaca/llama spit can be quite annoying. This behavior is inherited by their ancestors which can also affect how prone the alpaca/llama is to spitting. If the alpaca/llama is aggressive and cranky, it's likely for it to spit more than others, however if it is friendly, then it's more probable that it will rarely spit.
