I think that the skull, in a way, represents death. The use of more neutral, kind of sad colors as well as the over mood of the painting suggests loneliness or emptiness, and a lack of happiness. Perhaps the artist wanted to show the feeling of death, and what happens when you lose someone and are left with that lonely, empty feeling, with just their belongings keeping you company.

What I noticed, was a few melting clocks draped over a hard table, tree branch and blanket. Maybe the artist wanted to show that melting clocks could show that time is very unreal. While the desert looks like a loneliness lifestyle. The artwork might encourage viewers to appreciate time since sometimes time can feel meaningless mostly in dreams. I think what the painting is saying is how the reality is not always what it looks.
