It helps students understand how numbers relate to each other as well as the number system. Relating problems to something students can connect with is critical for engagement and understanding. One way to do this is by using effective real life story problems. Understanding a student's previous knowledge on math skills is critical as well for their ability to understand new content. When a student has a number sense understanding they then develop a range of mathematical strategies. Not only do they develop a range of math strategies but flexibility in the ability to use them as well.
