Atticus defends the misunderstood and the minorities. He's very empathetic and understanding, and tries to think the best of people- especially Boo Radley and Walter Cunningham. When Walter comes to the Finches for dinner, "he and Atticus talked together like two men..." (Lee 32). When Walter felt embarrassed and ashamed for being poor, Atticus helped him forget he was a Cunningham and feel welcomed.

Calpurnia is the cook and mother figure for the Finches since their mother is no longer alive. Atticus trusts her and things very highly of her, even though she is black. He also sees her as very educated. He gives her a lot of responsibility such as taking care of his children. Atticus sees Capurnia as an essential part of the family. He explains to Scout, "We couldn't operate a single day without Cal, have you ever thought of that?" (Lee 33) Calpurnia is part of the family and fills the motherly role that the family is missing.

Empathy- Stubborn

Atticus has strong beliefs about certain topics such as education. For example, he challenges Scout's empathy when she states that she does not want to go to school and wants to learn at home as he did. Although he makes a deal with her stating that if she goes, hey will read at home but she still does not understand why he is doing this. "In your case, the law remains rigid. So to school you must go" (Lee 40) Scout's empathy is challenged when her father is stubborn in his beliefs of her education continuing at school.

Scout is Atticus's daughter and they are very close. Atticus is the constant voice of reason in Scout's life, which at times challenges her empathy but always helps her have a better outlook on the situation. Atticus is very fatherly towards Scout and helps her throughout her problems. He also helped her learn to read and write which is important part of her life. Scout also worries Atticus greatly because she challenges the rules at times. However, he is very understanding towards her and tries to make agreements. He makes an agreement with her stating, "If you'll concede the necessity of going to school, we'll go on reading every might just as we always have" (Lee 41). Although he is stubborn and strict with her, he tries to make her understand and make agreements so that they are both happy.

Atticus is a lawyer for the town of Maycomb and represents many different people in town. Since Maycomb is a small, poor town and since Atticus also knows the struggles of having little money, he knows he can't also be paid for his work in money. He allows citizens he defends to pay with food, wood, plants, crops, and many other items. After defending the Cunningham family in a case, Mr. Cunningham isn't sure if he will be able to repay Atticus, to which Atticus replies by, "Let that be the least of your worries. . . "( Lee 27).

Empathy- Challenges the Town's Empathy

At the beginning of Atticus' career as a lawyer, he takes some rather difficult cases to defend. These cases also were close to the town, however the townspeople wanted the convicted to be guilty. People therefore looked down on Atticus for defending the convicted, and he challenged their empathy towards himself. Atticus ". . .first two clients were the last two persons hanged in the Maycomb County Jail,"(Lee 5).
