Dr Steam had in his box a little bolx of pins but, clumcy me, dropped them and filled the classsroom. The children gave many ideas on how to collect them. We finally used a magnet. Magnetic Discoveries in Kindergarten

In our kindergarten, we explored magnetic and non-magnetic objects. First, we made predictions about whether various objects would be attracted to the magnet or not. Then, we buried them in a sensory box filled with rice and used a magnet to "fish out" the magnetic ones. Finally, we recorded our results and compared them with our initial predictions

We painted pictures and created a meadow with "submissive butterflies". In this experiment, we discovered that a magnet can attract objects from a distance! To achieve this, we attached a paper clip - a material that is attracted by the magnet - to a paper butterfly - a material that is not attracted!

The children colaborated to create our Magneta. They used a metal tin for her body. Her hai, arms and legs are metal pipe cleaners. The wristbands and on her legs they added metal caps. The belt is a strip of magnet and they added metal paperclips. When our Magneta finshed the children used a magnet and tested our Magneta. All the parts were attracted to the magnet.

With a magnet, three metal washers threaded onto a string, and tempera paints in the three primary colors, we created an abstract painting!

As we moved the magnet under the paper, the washers "danced" on its surface, leaving colorful traces and forming patterns.

Experimenting with pair of magnets students observed that sometimes two magnets were attracted but some other times they are pushing each other away. The concept of the opposite magnetic poles was used to explain what was happening and a simple and funny way was used to make them understand it. Students separated in two teams, one wearing a paper bracelet with the sign N and the other one with the sign S. When music was playing they were all dancing but when the music was stopping they should find their mate with the different sign.

There was a lot of discussion among the students about Magneta and how she would look like. When they started to have an idea, they encouraged to imagine what kind of materials we could use and how. Finally our Magneta was made by various recyclable materias. Her main body is metal and her belt and wristbands are magnets. She has a magnet headband on her head and her colours blue and red were used in a way to remind the opposite magnet poles
