He was given the nickname "father of American public schools". He spoke to the citizens of Massachusetts about the importance of public schools. He thought of education as a way to solving problems in society like poverty and crime. The citizens voted to pay taxes to help build better schools, pay higher salaries for teachers, and open schools to help train teachers. Soon Mann's idea spread throughout the country and more and more states started to open public schools.

This movement was formed to help end slavery of Africans in the US. Some people involved were William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina and Sarah Grimke, Harriet Tubman, and two best known black abolitionists, Frederick Douglass and Sojourner. Each person had their own affect in the reform and their own accomplishments. This event also paved a road to another great reform the Women's Rights Movement.
