In today's world it is important for students to be responsible digital learners. By going through the training to be a Common Sense Educator I found many resources that could be used with my students to help grow them as digital citizens. I also found my students to be receptive to the lessons that I taught during my IMPACT class on digital citizenship.
Draime

Teaching the common sense lessons was a good engaging activity for students. It brings up concerns regarding their online presence as well as how other students perceive them. It opened up conversations for why these ideals are so important to their future and how what they do digitally now can impact their future opportunities. Creating a lesson plan for others to view is intimidating. I did not like the format template. I felt like it was hard to include all the steps for my lesson. It also made it difficult having to choose tech or non tech and not be able to explain fully what the class would be working on. I wanted to upload a file but was unable to, other than a picture file. The application process was easy but I am waiting to see if I am approved.Rose

I have really enjoyed the sessions I have completed so far since one of my personal goals this year is to utilize Office 365 on a daily basis and become more comfortable since I am a digital "immigrant." I like working with my peers because they can assist me with this goal, especially the digital "natives." Common Sense is a great resource for teachers. Common Sense also helps students be better digital citizens. I now understand how to get into the Teams area of Office 365 and join a collaboration. I have to experience things in order to learn them.

When I taught The Power of Words I showed the video to the students that was provided. Each table group received a handout. After the video they had to match the words to their definitions. They answered the questions from the front of the activity sheet on the back. They discussed their answer as a group and then one person wrote it down on the back. Once everyone was finished we discussed all of the answers as a whole group. We then discussed the Family Activities that was creating a Comic Strip about Cyberbullying. I told the students that for anyone that completed this assignment and showed it to me they would get extra credit.

I taught the Division Review with my small group Math tutoring group. I had noticed in tutoring that some of them were struggling with long division still and making careless mistakes. I was happy when I came across this pre-made lesson on the CommonSense website. The students enjoyed playing it and very engaged. They became very competitive amongst their team. This was a fun way for the students to review division.

The progress itself has been reflective, as I find myself re-evaluating my own Digital Citizenship practices I’ve been using and not using in my classroom. I’m having a lot of aha moments while completing this PD. Ms. Conklin has been a support for making this PD accessible by affording the time to complete it off campus as well. This is what Digital Citizenship is all about and looks like for our students; the ability to complete activities using technological resources effectively.
