Restructuring graduate experience by Scott Stevens

Working as a table, discuss 1) how you would begin to redesign an individual class session and then 2) how you might redesign the experience of writing in a course. How can we improve these?

Begin with clear expectations of Quality over Quantity. First night of class, we spend 10 minutes discussing this famous quote by Blaise Pascal:

“Je n’ai fait celle-ci plus longue que parce que je n’ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus courte.”
(“I have made this longer than usual because I have not had time to make it shorter.”)
—Blaise Pascal, French Mathematician & Philosopher, Lettres Provinciales, Letter 16, 1657.

This is the first prompt on the first writing assignment we have in MALT-652. We expect *ONE* TOP NOTCH page of excellence (as Pascal laments above that he had not the time to accomplish) rather than several pages of "fluff".
Also: Peer competition is fair & healthy: Lay out expectations that the top performance on each assignment will be used as the benchmark upon which all other students' work will be compared. This always seems to magically motivate students to perform much closer to their capability rather than count on me "graciously" grading with low-expectation "kindness." Fair competition motivates excellence.
