It was a way to:
- give back to society
- develop empathy and compassion

This sense of empathy only deepened as I grew and it was brought over to my adulthood. As an educator, this has also allowed me to better understand what my students are going through. Poetry is not everyone’s cup of tea. Changing the parents mindset on poetry takes time, so as future teachers, we need to do everything we can to open their eyes to the poetry world. Although I am not a language teacher, I can contribute by putting some poetry books in the class library. I am glad that we have teachers like Ms Pooja who are passionate about the subject. 

You don’t have to be a someone big to write poetry or to be involved in the poetry scene. Janine Shum, a 13-year-old Singaporean girl was a winner of the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition in 2018. At such a young age, she won this prestigious award. As a future teacher, I can share this news with my students and hopefully inspire them to be more daring and expressive in their creativity through the arts and poetry scene in Singapore.

They have different talents and we should not underestimate or disregard them. They must be thought of as contributors to Singapore’s society. We must embrace, include and support them. We must remember that people are different. We are all different and we make up the society. So, why should someone with special needs be excluded? Diversity in our community teaches us how to live together. We are all not from the same block but we have learned to live in harmony. Accepting and embracing people with special needs is integral in maintaining the harmony in our community.

This is a non profit organisation that allows anyone to submit their poetry online. This platform accepts poetry in English. They hope to get more entries from other languages in the future. I think that it is a great initiative for them to open this community to give the awareness and opportunities for anyone to submit their poetry.

The number of trained officers in mainstream schools is insufficient. Therefore, we are unable to provide students with special needs with the support they need. These students’ learning can be better facilitated if given the choice of one on one sessions.
 
It is the teacher’s responsibility to teach their students to be more accepting of their friends with special needs. We must think of ways to help them integrate better in mainstream schools. Students with special needs should not be excluded or feel that they are being discriminated by their teachers or peers.
It is of high importance that teachers are given support in the form of training or learning circles.
