As Bangalore rapidly expands into a major urban center, why are slums and shanty settlements continuing to grow alongside its development? What factors lead people to live in such informal areas, and what challenges do they face in their daily lives? How do these settlements affect the city’s environment, resources, and planning? Finally, what sustainable solutions could help improve living conditions and make Bangalore a more inclusive city for all?

Amidst Bangalore’s skyscrapers and tech hubs lies an unseen city, a network of slums where thousands of families live, work, and dream without recognition. While they contribute to the city’s growth, their own future is uncertain. Beyond poverty, their struggle for access to education and skill-building still remains.

How might we bridge the social, digital, and educational divide for Bangalore’s slum communities — transforming these “invisible” neighborhoods into recognized, empowered, and self-sustaining spaces where children and adults can learn, grow, and thrive?

Bangalore, known as the “Silicon Valley of India,” is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. While it offers great job opportunities, education, and a modern lifestyle, rapid urbanization has also led to challenges such as traffic congestion, rising living costs, water scarcity, and air pollution. This project aims to explore what it is truly like to live in Bangalore by examining both the advantages and the everyday problems faced by its residents.

Bangalore - A Pedestrian's Nightmare:

The problem I would like to explore is how Bangalore is not a pedestrian-friendly city. Bangalore currently is battling:

Lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure

Encroachment of land - particularly footpaths

Non-compliance to traffic and civic rules by the public either due to awareness or apathy

Lack of enforcement of laws by the police

This leads to many issues:

Due to lack of pedestrian friendly infrastructure, citizens don't use public transport leading to more traffic,

Don't walk even short distances, creating health issues, and

Leads to many road accidents annually.

Bangalore's Slums:

Another problem I would like to explore is how we can improve the life of people in the slums of Bangalore. The slums are small but spread out throughout the city, this makes our problem easier to fix, but how? All these slums put together house over 1.4 million residents, which is aproximately 16.45% of the population of Bangalore. How can we, as a city, put together a plan to reduce this number, or maybe just improve the infrastructure, facillies, and standards or living in the slums?
