By Lillian Smith

Jesse Owens real name was James Cleveland Owens. He was born on September 12, 1913 and he died on March 13, 1980. He was a famous sprinter. Jesse Owens is remembered for one stunning week in 1936, when he won four track and field gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Berlin. When Jesse was in high school he set a world record of 9.4 seconds in the 100-meter dash. The Summer Games of 1936 were held in Berlin, where 🤬 leader Alford Hitler seemed determined to display the superiority of the German “Aryan” race. Owens, an African-American, put that notion to rest by winning many medals. In 1976, President Gerald Ford awarded Owens with the Medal of freedom.

             By Reagan Donnelly

Born on February 6, 1945, died on May 11, 1981, he was a singer and songwriter known as the first reggae legend in the world. He originally gained early attention for writing songs sung by other people, such as "Stir It Up" (Recorded by Johnny Nash) and "I Shot The Sheriff" (Recorded by Eric Clapton.) He rose to fame to the person he was today by writing and singing songs about religion, politics, and life on the streets. Bob Marley was a global superstar who had risen to fame so much when he, unfortunately, died of cancer at only 36 years old. In 1984, a "greatest hits" compilation was released in his honor. Titled "Legend", it became known as the album owned by people that only owned one reggae album. His legacy, however, has passed on, for it will live forever in the songs written by Bob Marley.

Phillis Wheatley was born around May 8, 1753 in west Africa. Phillis is known for being a black woman in America that was a poet, and a slave. Phillis came to north America and was put into the Boston slave market in 1761. Around 7 or 8 years old Phillis was purchased by John Wheatley for his wife, Susannah. She was named Phillis and given her master’s surname. In a short amount of time she mastered English, and the Wheatleys saw to it that she learned literature, mythology, Latin and Greek. By the time she was 13 she was writing her own poems. As she grew older she got married to John Peters, and had three children. She passed away in December 5, 1784 at the age of 31.

Sources:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillis_Wheatley
http://www.who2.com/bio/phillis-wheatley/

But, she eventually went to West Virginia State College, a college for people of color.

After graduating, Katherine got a job as a human computer at NASA in 1953 and stayed there through 1958. When NASA used electronic computers for the first time to calculate John Glenn's orbit around Earth, officials called on Katherine to verify the computer's numbers. Glenn had asked for her specifically and had refused to fly unless Katherine verified the calculations. Katherine did verify the calculations. And the computers got the calculations wrong! And Katherine got them right. If she, a black woman, had not checked those calculations, the rocket that took John Glenn to space would not have ever blasted off. Or it might have blown up. Or worse.

Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson now lives in Virginia, she is retired and will turn one hundred years old this August.

You may have seen a film called Hidden Figures. That film’s main character’s name is Katherine Johnson, but had you ever heard of Katherine G. Johnson before that film came out. I didn’t think so. Katherine (then Coleman) was born on August 26, 1918, In Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. She was admitted into a high school when she was only ten years old, and graduated when she was fourteen. Katherine had to look hard for a good school that would accept a black girl as a student.

Katherine G Johnson

You may have seen a film called Hidden Figures. That film’s main character’s name is Katherine Johnson, but had you ever heard of Katherine G. Johnson before that film came out. I didn’t think so. Katherine (then Coleman) was born on August 26, 1918, In Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. She was admitted into a high school when she was only ten years old, and graduated when she was fourteen. Katherine had to look hard for a good school that would accept a black girl as a student.
