The speakers point of view impacts him because he has seen so many new boys come into the army he knows their typical flaws. An example of this is when he says "all armies are the same" and in the fourth line says "valor is an attribute of boys." This shows that he has seen the paths the young boys take in the army, and he knows where it leads. The speaker has experienced life in war for so long he knows what the young soldiers think and strive for.

The speaker's impression of the younger soldiers is impacted by his point of view that these soldiers are filled with a sense of false security and courage going into war, the speaker seems to know a lot about what war is truly like. In line four, the speaker states that “Valr is an attribute of boys…” This phrase shows how the speaker finds bravery only in the “boys.” The speaker then states in “Old soldiers have tired eyes. All soldiers hear the same old lies…” The speaker clearly is not fond of war and sees it as a toxic place that only takes away your sense of valor. In conclusion, the speaker sees the same spark in young soldiers but his point of view that war is brutal causes his impression of these men to be that of a false promise of war.

The speakers point of view impacts his impression of the younger soldiers because he has gone through all the terrors and is in disbelief by how "valor" the younger soldiers are. This is shown when he says, "valor is an attribute of boys". The first quote tells the reader that bravery and excitement is only shown in younger, less experienced man. He later says, "old soldiers all have tired eyes". This tells us that as you get older you start to see more horrific sights and you lose your will to fight. The quotes listed above all come together to show that the author is in shock that younger man could be so courageous after what he had just seen.

The speakers point of view, which is that war is a demoralizing and negative thing, impacts his impression of the younger soldiers by giving war a negative connotation and that having courage as a young soldier is all just a lie, due to the fact the he probably experienced being a young soldier. In line 4, the author states, "Valor is an attribute of boys." This shows that young soldiers or boys don't understand that valor is false, but older, more experienced soldiers do. In line 6, the author says, "All soldiers hear the same old lies." This reveals that soldiers don't truly know what happens in war until actual experience because stories brought back from other soldiers are just lies. From these, you can tell that the author views war as this terrible, horrible, disheartening thing that young soldiers wrongly perceive as having valor if they go experience it.

He goes on to say "Valor is an attribute of boys" and then says "All soldiers hear the same old lies". This implies that the false feeling of valor felt by younger soldiers is a false promise of war.
